ok, Bridget, so we (entire fam) are curious about how research waste (not just the human waste - thought that is of interest is well) is handled. The photos are absolutely fantastic!

Disclaimer: Talking only about this project (some of it does apply to other projects but it's not all blanket solutions)

Trash waste is all collected in a trash bag and when the helicopter comes to pick up the cores (about every two days probably once we are drilling steadily - want to get the cores into the freezer as quickly as possible) the trash will be loaded in with it and brought down (maybe every two or three heli loads, we don't make that much trash). We have the same deal for recycle as well.

Now for the TMI section...
Human waste is a pretty similar situation in some ways. We have a pee pit that has pee that will just stay forever (though it quickly will be buried by 10s of feet of snow over winter). In past projects up here they have done a long drop for solid waste, which is exactly what it sounds like: drill a long hole and go to the bathroom into that which will be in the ice forever. This time around we have a lovely product called "wag bags" which are very large doggy bags with a little bit of litter, toilet paper, and a sanitizing wipe. We go to the bathroom in those, seal them up, and put them into a large contractor's bag that will get sling loaded (carried under the heli) back to base camp and thrown out. It's a bit weird at first but you get used to it quite quickly.

Well that sounds delightful.

Definitely better than leaving it there! Even at the bottom of a hole.

Glad they fly it out for you. We used them for backcountry camping in high alpine areas, and figuring out what to do with human waste and food when you have only one bear can isn't so fun.

Oof that does not sound like a fun predicament
