In the UK you wouldn't be allowed to shadow someone before your own run, and then still have a competitive result. You'd either have to shadow after, or declare yourself non-comp.

I guess US rules are more relaxed / non existent? Or is this a low key enough race that no one cares?

Non-NRE event, so no real rules in effect. Nothing at stake.

They’d still be tut-tutting over here…

Yeah, if it was an NRE, i wouldn't have done it in that order. But the boys needed to leave early, and we wanted to set them up for success.
It felt like the options were to shadow them on the intermediate course or send them out alone on beginner, which is too easy. There was no advanced beginner option at this event.

Almost no club here in the USA has the numbers of families with young kids attending for them to worry about much tut-tutting. I will on any day defend the adult who prioritizes shadowing and helps growing our numbers of young orienteers against any tut-tuts, and hope the kids will come back next time and their parents do not go and find a more family friendly activity....

Me, too. We have to make this possible and fun for families. It really stinks when a club is overly strict on this for local events (which I have certainly experienced), especially if you have kids who need to be shadowed for longer before they become independent.

Glad you had such a great turnout, Boris!

FWIW, at CascadeOC's Winter League events, which are the most competitive with the most participants and most rules, you are allowed to run a competitive course after shadowing a student-athlete.

I suppose it would be poor form and generate some tut-tuts if one were run a course after having shadowed someone around the same course. ;-)

Based on his results, Finn N looks like a blossoming O-star.

How does he compare to Isaac?
