So sorry this happened to you and so many more. The smoke really messed up United way more than other airlines. Something in their process needs to be fixed. Full planes do make it hard to fit anyone else in. Hope you find a way to get there.

Such a bummer, sorry you had to deal with all that hassle. And to miss the trip. Maybe go to an Italian restaurant in Missoula every night this week?

Why add punishment to the disappointment of missing the trip? :)

Oh noooo. This just sucks. After all that pain of sitting on planes and waiting, to not end up where you wanted -- just not fun at all. So sorry.

Oh no! I’m so sorry. That really sucks to be missing out on the races and the time with friends.

I hope United at least tries to make it up to you.

If they don't, demand they do...

Not smoke as much as Newark getting completely hosed by thunderstorms for several days last week and that spreading out through the system. I watched ops there for an afternoon last week and they had several hours where nothing went in or out with dozens of diversions. Since passenger numbers are as high as ever and it's one of the busiest travel weeks of the year, there's basically no slack in the system. Monday Morning Quarterbacking to ask if you could have gotten to Munich and taken a train. But, yes, this sucks muchly.

According to the United reps in Denver, there was nothing to either Munich or Frankfurt for at least three days.

Bit late now, but did you consider asking for a flight to anywhere in Europe? Once here, you will always find some way of getting yourself to Venice (although possibly at high cost).

Having said all that, the weather in the Dolomites really sucks this week so at least you're not missing out on magnificent orienteering (though still on the company, of course).

Yes guys, United could literally not get us to Europe for three days. We tried everything we could.
