Discussion: LAStools virus warning??

in: Orienteering; General

I am trying to download LAStools. Hundreds of people doing orienteering mapping use LAStools as a tool in bringing .las/.laz files into DEM and .shp files on the way to their orienteering mapper.
It must be safe from viruses, right?
Well my computer defender, McAfee, thinks otherwise and keeps blocking it.
Has anyone else encountered this block and what is the workaround?

Looks like they just went through some updating And as of February, rapidlasso has the German .de extension rather than .com (not sure)
Some additional info on the changes

Clicked on this thread curious what LA Stools virus is.

Joe, you're not alone.

OCAD uses LaStools internally with all the right switches. No need for separate install.

@haywoodkb does not work everywhere, e.g., Wisconsin, where there is no State Plane, but every county has their own projection, most available data are not on NOAA, and OCAD does not include all the "right switches", at least not yet. New flown data are hopefully all in UTM. But until then some of us may still need LAStools quite a bit even if mapping in OCAD

An explanation: I have been making maps using OCAD very happily without having to use LAStools, shp files or any of that other stuff or steps that users of Open Orienteering Mapper go through. OCAD does the processing internally for me.
However last month and in short order I came across two situations where I needed to broaden my knowledge to include use of QGIS and LAStools.
In short it is like the person who has always driven a vehicle with automatic transmission suddenly having to drive a standard.
All was going well until I tried to download the free LAStools software. McAfee is giving me a warning of a potential virus and not making it easy for me to override that warning.
I decided to check here to see if the warning was legitimate. It seems it is and it isn't. McAfee is not comfortable with the LAStools site but it is out of caution and not because there is a virus lurking.
Thanks all who offered advice.
Sorry to those who got caught up in the subject line.

This thread has been a real disappointment to me.

However I do know of the pain of not been able to access websites because my virus protection software decided it was unworthy of further investigation, taking the easy option and just blocking it.

Sorry to hear about the Wisconsin problem. I read some notes on the various CRS they have, and it does seem like the worse possible situation.

QGIS 3.32 added some processing features for lidar.

@gordhun that’s very weird indeed. I have McAfee as well, but had no problems installing even after it scanned for viruses. However, the program was quite buggy, so maybe as andreais mentioned there was an update as I installed Lastools a couple months ago.

@gordhun, you never mentioned the link you are using to download LASTools from. These are a-okay:

If it’s not from one of the above locations, McAfee may be correct, and I’d not use the downloaded software.

Thanks Hugh.
When I get back from NAOC I'll check on that.

And I thought this was a thread about the Los Angeles sewerage system.
