Rob and I will have a few hours in Edinburgh city centre on our way to Coast and Islands and then after Scottish 6 Days. Any recommendations for the best way to spend our time? Thanks!

Depends on what you're interested in! The Crags are a nice walk with a great view of the city, my personal preference over Arthur's Seat itself but both are good. The Royal Mile is a fairly classic tourist spot, and Grassmarket has the castle looming above it and has good food spots; both of those are in the WOC embargo so take care, make sure you don't partake in any activity that would provide an advantage for any orienteers going to WOC. You can get a good view from Calton Hill, not far from the city centre, as well. Finally, the Meadows are basically a big field and are good for relaxing.

If you want to take a bus, you can also reasonably go to the Pentlands, which is a nice open hill area where you can easily forget you're near a city, or Portobello Beach is quite nice and has some good food options as well, ice cream, fish and chips.

Hopefully that was helpful!

The Edinburgh fringe festival will have started on your way back from 6-days. So I would go to the Royal mile and soak up the street performers and head towards the university and meadows for a bunch of food and drinks outside especially if it’s a nice day.

Also the national museum of Scotland on chambers street is great! Right near the greyfriers bobby statue as well.

But yes there is a woc embargo as Thomas says.

Thanks for these great suggestions. The fringe festival might explain the high hotel prices for Aug. 5 but it sounds like fun.
