Good friends of mine have a daughter, son-in-law, and two grandsons living in Morocco. They come here to visit every year for an extended stay.

During this visit, I suggested that they try orienteering at a meet we had at a small city park. The 12-year-old, who had never even heard of orienteering before, did the White course with his mother and grandmother. At least he started with them -- he left them in the dust after the 3rd control and successfully and quickly did the last 8 controls on his own, some of which were non-trivial for a first time orienteer.

He REALLY liked it. I did a search on orienteering in Morocco and didn't come up with much. Does anyone know if there are active clubs in Morocco?

There have been events run in Morocco by tour operators from outside but I'm not aware of any local organisation. They're not an IOF member and haven't applied in recent years as far as I know.

The medina (old town) in Marrakesh, and probably several other Moroccan (and other Arabic/Middle Eastern) cites, would be a seriously awesome place for a sprint/urban event.

Check with Linda Kohn and Rick Worner. They lived there for a year (?) In the later 90s and might have some ideas.

Morocco has lots of potential for orienteering but we never found any local organizations interested doing it. It was rumored that an outside group once offered an event near Rabat, but we never found it. The climate and topography are very similar to southern California.

Apparently there have been Moroccan 3 days in 2010 and 2012. http://omaps.worldofo.com/index.php?st=MoroccO has links to some maps.

The Moroccan 3 days were organised by https://sun-o.com/en/
A south Spain based tour/training camp operator. They should know if there is some local orienteering.

We visited in 2019. Can reinforce what Blair said about world's best urban sprint areas and Rick about potential. We saw some really nice rocky terrain in the forested parts of the Atlas Mountains.

I did an excursion there in 2013 with the Sun-O folks. I think it was all very dependent on the Spanish orienteers, they may have had a few local Moroccan contacts/keeners but they said there was no formal club there. The old town sprint in Chefchaouen was very memorable.
