From what I gleaned from my Somali taxi driver encounter this year, Turkey is using its national carrier to have a big impact in the Horn of Africa. They're trying to counter/piggyback China's influence there. (But that's from a lad who's sending his son to Mogadishu rather than Denver to receive a "balanced" education.)
Enjoying the read Mike. No Orienteering for Mary in Addis Ababa?

We thought we would be spending the whole layover in the airport so I didn’t plan to orienteer here. Plus we’re tired from travel and a few days of bad sleep. Napping in the hotel was glorious.

You two like it? I've a friend who taught there twice and I think he really enjoyed it.

Our visit was really limited. But I can tell you that part of the experience had me thinking it would be fun to read what Danny would say about the experience.

I’ll try to write it up when I get a chance. Suffice it to say we interacted with everything from airline employees to the military police to the national cybersecurity department in order to get my binoculars.

Sounds eye opening!! They're still in the middle of a war, right?
