You mean there's a country I got to orienteer in before you did? Amazing! I competed in carnivals there in both 2019 and 2022. No snow involved though.

Paula ran a World XC in Poland in ‘87, an interesting experience by all accounts.

I enjoyed Poland both times I was there - they have some big rocks - though it did also involve the experience of having all courses cancelled in the 2019 carnival due to a death on course during the event.

In as much as most people did - I'd started to take a pretty strong interest in world news by then (partly triggered by spending several months in Europe in 1981), and the rise of Solidarity and the subsequent crackdown in 1981 was one of the first significant international stories I remember following (actually, something I could add to my list as things I wouldn't have expected in 1982 was that I - and you - would come to know one of the Gdansk shipyard strikers).
