Benign? When we tried it we stopped about 100 metres before the top due to hard ice, gale force winds and lack of ice axe and crampons. That was mid summer.

I did it in the 1980's.

Was extremely windy at the summit when I climbed it and we could not make the last bit, a couple of days after we climbed some hikers got blow off and died!

Was still called Mt Egmont in the 1980's

Bruce:
Delayed our walk till Tuesday as the forecast improved. Sunny with a few clouds hanging around the edge of the mountain. Very lucky to have been able to climb twice now in 4 years in good weather.

Thought Tuesday would have been OK. Monday would not have been - even at low elevations the southerly was fierce once you were no longer on the sheltered northern side.
