Discussion: compass

There are a few different approaches. One is a wrist compass, which you wear just like a watch. Some brands market these separately. Moscow offers a wrist strap/mount that you can transfer the capsule from one of their baseplate or thumb compasses into. Convenient if you happen to break a baseplate or thumbplate and find yourself with a spare capsule.

I've also seen compasses mounted on a clip that people then slide on the corner of their mapboard, sometimes adding some tape to keep it in place. Never tried this one myself. I think maybe Silva made these?

Another approach is mounting a compass on the mapholder. There was at one time a model from Nordenmark that came with a compass mounted on a flange attached to the chestplate. I've also had success taping a baseplate compass to the swing-arm between the mapboard and the chestplate using sturdy tape.

And of course there's always (well until last night) the tried and true approach of just using the sun. Ski-o start times are pretty often clustered relatively close to solar noon.

Good to know! Today I tried sticking a compass to the map board arm. It worked pretty well - although I should find a more permanent solution than velcro tape.

I have my compass attached with industrial strength velcro tape. It's quite solidly on there.

I should probably actually put my wrist compass on my wrist. Pretty sure it's in my bag but I just did 2 ski-o's in a row without remembering it. I would like to know where one gets industrial strength velcro. I didn't know there was such a thing. I've had mixed success using the store bought velcro for my boot scraper.

I just got it at a store - Staples, maybe? Based on google, it looks readily available. I also had a bit of aluminum attached to the bottom of the map holder arm for boot cleaning, but that eventually got lost. (I think probably because I didn't always get it squarely on the patch of velcro rather than through any lack of stick on the velcro's part.)
