Discussion: AFJROTC Orienteering Nationals Completed

in: USA Air Force JROTC Orienteering Championships (Feb 24–25 - New Port Richey, FL, US)

I guess in some books that would be the first orienteering national championships of 2024 is now in the books. Nine Air Force JROTC teams spread from Maryland to Texas met up in Florida for their annual event. Suncoast Orienteering and Florida Orienteering combined forces to give the cadets a national, even international level experience with live tracking that the folks back home could watch as their friends' icons raced across their computer screen.

Was there a Drone Orienteering Competition? You fly the Drone with an Si-air enabled chip stuck to the bottom. Get it within 2 feet of the flag ... can the drone relay the beep through the video feed so you're confident you can then fly to the next marker?

No there wasn't a drone competition.

Before I ever knew there was an AFJROTC orienteering event, I thought wouldn't it be cool to have drone-O. And such an organisation seems like the perfect match for it

I hope some of the top Air Force kids can make it out to Washington to compete against the at-large JROTC field!

As I understand it at least the AFJROTC and NJROTC already have separate drone competitions.
I would be shocked and dismayed if there were to be a serious move to incorporate drone categories into orienteering competitions.
Drones are interesting and probably fun to operate, just like model airplanes and helecopters. However a drone competition is not an an athletic contest.

You have it backwards. It's not about incorporating drones into orienteering, it's about adding an orienteering event to the drone competitions.

Respectfully jjc that is not what he asked. Over and out!

You're right about that. I guess it would be as out of place as... Trail-O.

Tired: orienteering into the Olympics
Wired: orienteering into e-sports

If someone puts on a Drone-O, I will try it, especially if they supply the drone.

And wouldn't a Trail O control be a perfect course for Drone O? Just add epunches to the orange bags and SI air enable them.

And then you can use the Drone's video feed to make the Trail-O quesstion a lil easier.

Kills two boulders with one drone.

Wow! How these AP threads can get sent off on tangents!
The point of this thread was to say that yes there is life in the AFJROTC orienteering community and it is life that will grow if the orienteering community tailors events to meet the AFJROTC schedule and needs.
These events will continue to be national in invitation but regional in nature unless the Air Force authorities can get the resources to put into championship travel the way the Navy JROTC does. Those are pretty big regions.
Our regional draw stretched from Maryland to Texas and brought several new teams into our large Florida JROTC orienteering umbrella. If any club would like to investigate further the idea of hosting a JROTC national championships or even just growing your JROTC particpation at your local events you know how to reach me.

As far as AP tangents go, I've certainly seen wilder than a discussion of piloting unmanned aircraft to specific locations in a thread about orienteers who have an affiliation with an entity that pilots unmanned aircraft to specific locations.

I'd be willing to bet the championship category of orienteers who would be into drone orienteering the most would be the AFJROTC contingent.
