Discussion: Maps of Slovenia and Croatia

I will be traveling through Slovenia and northern Croatia for four weeks starting mid-May. I enjoy visiting cities and towns by using an old sprint map and following the course to get into the alleyways and off the beaten track. I have used World of O in the past, but there seems to be major issues with it currently. If you have traveled through this region before and have attended orienteering events, would you be willing to share your map with me, either electronically or by sending me a copy?

Thanks for your consideration in advance!

You may also want to contact the organizers of the In addition to being empresarios of the Slovene O scene, they appear to have lots of experience working with visitors and arranging training events.

My wife and I visited Croatia last October and really enjoyed it. We took part in an event on the island Brac just off the coast from Split.
Very nice and friendly atmosphere - the terrain is different from what we´re used to from home but that´s one of the reasons to travel.

Maps (Livelox) from the event can be found on their Facebook page together with lots of other information. They also have a special web page for the Brac Orienteering Championship.

Plitvice Lakes National Park - halfway between Zagreb and Split - is highly recommended for touristy purposes.

You can also find maps from Livelox by choosing "All events" + country & time in the drop-down list on top of the page.

What else is new? I wrongly assumed World of O would be useful in planning for events when travelling internationally but there's bugger all in there (and zero MTBO events even though it's an option).

@bubo I've looked at the maps available through Livelox in Croatia, but it seems that they are password protected and I cannot access them. Are you aware of how I might be able to get these maps?

@willemspie I'd love to attend that event, but unfortunately, I do not arrive in Croatia until early June.

As days become long, and nights are short in early June, increased sun radiation means the beginning of a hot summer season in the Balkans region, so orienteering may not be the best selection of outdoor activity. Summer is a good time to spend on the beaches, that Adriatic Sea is famous for.

I don´t know of any special restrictions to watching certain maps in Livelox. Maybe that is because I have a paid subscription to Livelox so I always log in to watch my maps and then get access to everything.

Edit: I now realise that it is not always possible to download the maps and that´s what your problem is - not watching them.

We recently went to Spain and Portugal, and I had fun with maps of several old towns that we visited. We didn't really care where we went in an old town; we just wanted to explore. It turned out that O maps were the best way to navigate anyway.

I did a Google search, e.g. "Malaga orienteering map" and selected Images in the results. Some of the maps I found were in DOMAs. They all had courses on them and one had someone's route on it, but that didn't matter too much.

This blog entry has a couple of maps from southern Slovenia. They're not urban sprints but it looks like interesting hiking terrain.
