Rosstopher: Is there any place for "work smarter, not harder" in the pursuit of dedication? 12 hours in the gym is laudable when it comes to showing commitment but also seems like a good way to get hurt.
I guess I'll stick to praising his achievements and stop rationalizing my lack of focus :)

Reebok had those run at the speed of chat ads that really bugged me, where they tried to discount the efforts of athletes by championing the average Joe. The TV ads showed brilliant runners collapsing on the finish line and implied that working hard enough to lose control of your muscles was embarassing.

Swampfox: Rossman, my take on this is not that if someone wants to be as good as (name your superstar, hero, over-performer, whatever) _______, then they have to slavishly do exactly what they did. But, rather, when you look at, say, a Michael Jordan or a Stevie Ray Vaughan or such, you need to understand that a *tremendous* amount of effort--and, just as importantly, passion--went into their becoming as good as they became. In many, if not most cases, it would be a level of committment that the ordinary person probably couldn't begin to comprehend.
