R Anderson:

Jon, I read the email you sent out to richard about the relay teams. I think i'll be going down that weekend and am also wondering about teams. Would you want to compete in the challenge cup? It sounds like a cool idea. I don't know what others are thinking, or if anyones thought up anything yet, but i think a good competitive team could be you, Emily, Eric and I. I'm not sure though if Eric has exams then or not. What do you guys think?

jtorranc: Travelling so a slow reply from me. I'm a little bit unsure about the Challenge Cup - my impression is it's designed to give people whose clubs won't field teams or who don't fit on club teams that meet the 4 point, 8 point and 12 point requirements a meaningful competition. Pretty cool idea, really. I haven't asked Randy to explain his philosophy of team formation in detail but I assume Ottawa will try to form competitive teams according to the same criteria as the US club teams first and only worry about the Challenge Cup as a secondary concern, if at all - it's not as though Ottawa has a huge excess of fast elite runners who aren't worth any points, which presumably will be the formula for a winning Challenge Cup team.

R Anderson: I thought you still needed a 4point team for the challenge cup?

R Anderson: "The Challenge Cup will match US versus Canadian relay teams. Team members must be either all COF or all USOF members. To compete competitively in the Challenge Cup teams will be required to meet the requirements of the 4-person, 4/8/12 point system. Awards will be given for the winning 4/8/12 point teams." Ya whatever i dunno...

jtorranc: Hmmm.... based on the earliest announcements, I had thought the Challenge Cup had no requirements for teams other than everyone having the same federation membership. I assumed it therefore involved only the 4 point course combination. But the actual rules seem better. Throws up in the air what will actually make sense - a pity we probably don't have three fast M21s to put on a team with Emily, one of whom is a competent orange but not advanced orienteer - but I'll trust in Randy to figure out what our best teams and categories are.

I wonder whether Margus is a COF rather than Estonian federation member.

R Anderson: ya three 0's and emily would be an amazing team:p I don't think Margus is living in Ottawa anymore.
