bbrooke: I have the same problem with pace goals in my running group. For me, I have basically two speeds: "trying hard" and "not trying hard".

Cristina: I don't have too much of a problem picking a pace if it's related to a race pace or the concept of 'interval' or 'tempo'. I think I can feel the difference between 5k pace, 10 mile race pace, etc. What I do find really difficult is to relate pace to percent effort. I haven't the slightest idea what 80% or 90% effort are and I am totally bewildered when people find numbers like that to be helpful. I guess my mind works with the idea of 'max pace I could hold for x distance or y time' rather than any perception of effort relative to others.
