The WOC organizers have released info on the Sprint Champs. In another discussion thread a few questions came up that we can now answer:

"anyone know the estimated winning time for the new sprint event?"

12 minutes.

"is it in the woods or similar to park events?"

The terrain seems to be a mix of forest and park.

For all the info, take a look at:

Some news about the sprint race...

Approximate length, climb and winning times of the WOC sprint: Women 1.9 ... 2.2 km 40 m 12 min; Men 2.3 ... 2.6 km 60 m 12 min.

The U.S. gets one entry in each event.

It looks like there will be a chance to train in the actual competition terrain with an old map on the day before the event.

Maybe everyone else already knows this, but it is news to me (from the latest WOC bulletin).

"A forking system will be used in the men’s classic distance final. It consists of two short legs (2 x 400 m), near the middle of the course, which are run in the opposite order by alternate competitors."

I remember noticing that also...do you think that means people will be running those two legs in both directions? (i.e. with the possibility to be lead into the control by an exiting runner) or alternatively some z-shaped thing, although that would involve three legs.

I guess it must be some way of making a spectator control. The translation to english probably leaves something to be desired.

It reminds me of a translation problem I had at a race in Sweden in the mid-80s.

The organizers warned us, "there are many dangerous sheep in the forest." It was a World Cup race in a small town called Gamelby. The warning caused quite a stir among the teams and coaches. I was at the team leader meeting where coaches were trying to get the organizers to explain what was going on. It turned out that it was just a translation error. The area was full of cliffs -- 3-5 meters and these could be dangerous (picture running full tilt off the top of a 5 meter cliff while looking at your map). The Swedish word from a small cliff is "brant." "Brant" also means steep. The organizers made a bit of a typing mistake and you got a warning about the dangerous sheep.
