wilsmith: Yeah - at least, the model map I got had some control circles and numbers, which I took to indicate that there would be controls at those locations. There were some controls out there to be seen, but not at the exact locations circled on my map. There was one that was close (within 30-50m), so I went to check the number and yes, it was the right number for the location that was circled nearby. The other controls were well off and I didn't bother to visit them. I think Eddie noticed this as well - we were discussing it briefly. Either that, or I am way off on my orienteering, which is certainly possible.

Anyway, no big deal - it is a real treat to have the map sample and get out there to run and warm up (I prefer this to running along roads whenever possible). Controls are only a bonus for me; whether they are out there or not doesn't make much difference in my warmup. I just wonder if some of the beginner orienteers may find misplaced controls in the model event confusing or distressing.

eddie: I went to 5 or 6 of the model control locations and none of them had flags. A couple of the locations had nearby flags which I just assumed were rec so I didn't bother to check their codes, but the others had no flag in sight that I can recall.

I'll second that on the model map. Always nice to have a section of forest and a piece of map to warm up on - controls or not. If there's no inbound forest I'll just carry an old map and warm up on the road. If no old map, at least one of the same scale. Warming-up with a map in-hand always helps to get my brain in order before the start.

wilsmith: Will Hawkins sorted this out for me. Turns out the controls were exactly as they should be, according to the master map he provided. But the circles on our maps were incorrectly transposed when the mini model maps were created by another organizer for printing/distribution. No matter - like you, I'm just happy to have a model map in my hand to warm up on, and that simple touch was very much appreciated this past weekend.
