| khall: | Anyone planning to camp at Hickory Run for the DVOA meet/Team Trials? A few of us were discussing the fact that it might be more social if we manage to get sites in the same general area of the campground. Anyone stayed there before and have advice/suggestions? |

| fossil: | Kristin, I was just looking this over as a possibility earlier today. We usually camp at A-meets when the logistics make sense, which is not always the case. My initial conclusion was that I wasn't sure if it made sense in this case, though now that you've brought it up I will have to re-think. Our kids would certainly enjoy camping with friends.
What was bothering me was the distance between the two venues, the fact that Hickory Run is day 2 and not day 1 or day 3, and that the start window is early in the day on Monday, necessitating a very early camp-breaking. On the other hand Hickory Run boasts a beach and a playground, both of which will be popular with the kids if the weather is reasonable. I don't believe I've ever camped in the public campground there, but I did notice on the map that one of the loops gets pretty close to the playground, in the vicinity of sites 54, 56, etc. Also I haven't looked at the reservation site yet, but this being a holiday weekend I expect occupancy will be high. Whenever we've camped this weekend in the Adirondacks the campgrounds have been full or very nearly full. |

| L-Jackson: | We are likely to make reservations this weekend. I just checked and it looks like there are only about 20 sites left. Looks like sites 300 to about 350.... |
| # Posted 2008-04-26 09:48:04 | |
| fossil: | Yes, 22 by my count. And you have more kids in the same age range. This might work out. The best block of sites I see available looks like 328-333. Looks like a short walk from there to the (other) playground, though it does require crossing the road, which is less than ideal. Close but not too close to the restrooms. We will need to move quickly. I will probably reserve something in the morning after talking it over with Laurie. |

| fossil: | Ok I've reserved site 328. 329-333 and 336-338 are all still available and contiguous to this if people act quickly. There are now only 21 reservable sites left out of 381 total. |

| khall: | Okay, we just reserved site 329.
We can all get up early together on Monday morning. My kids are already excited by the photo of the nice sandy beach! And at least Sunday we will barely have to drive at all. Hopefully it will be gorgeous and sunny like it is today! |

| L-Jackson: | We are in as well. Site 330. |

| kissy: | I just reserved site 332 for me and Dave Pruden. |

| jjcote: | Nancy and I are in 331. |

| walk: | We're in 333. No snoring allowed. |

| eddie: | There goes the neighborhood...
Hey George, check out this fine shot |
| # Posted 2008-04-27 20:42:21 | |
| ahall: | Excellent. Glad I started this thread - should be fun. I notice Kissy and Dave chose to be a small gap away from the nearest kids ... but don't worry Kissy, we'll send them all to visit you at your site :-) |
| # Posted 2008-04-27 22:04:55 | |
| kissy: | No, that's not true. Site 331 was already taken by jj and nancy. I love kids and I would say to send them our way, but I hear that Dave is pretty anti-kids. He scares them away. ;-) Plus, I am now sandwiched between jj and walk. How much better can it get?!? |

| khall: | Big kids instead of little kids? |
| # Posted 2008-04-28 02:35:53 | |
| walk: | Eddie - Boy, that guy looks like he is really moving, wish he had that today on a regular course instead of a sprint. Thanks.
Yeah - we'll be establishing a big kid zone, so beware. |

| medag: | I got 337, kissy, now you have also Alex behind your back. |

| orienteeringmom: | As a native PA resident that has camped at Hickory Run both at the campgrounds and the cabins, please be very carefull with your food. Make sure that it is always in a secure place as the black bears are very plentiful up there. We have had them visit our DVOA Triaining Camping weekend a number of years and even had one goes through a cabin window for food that Boy Scouts had in their cabin while they were in there. Not trying to scare you, just want you to have a safe and fun weekend. I'm sure the park rangers will give you all of the info when you check in. |

| fossil: | Wow, lots of kids. Thanks for suggesting this, Kristin. I was already at the point of comparing various hotel options when this came up. Now I guess we'd better plan on some evening campfires with smores and stuff.
Yeah, Janet. We've seen bears at campgrounds in the Adirondacks before. One in particular. They always seem to come through at dinner time looking for unguarded food. Up there some campgrounds even have lockers in all the campsites where you are required to secure all food items and cooking pans and utensils that aren't locked in your car. When I was a kid they used to trap the bears, tag them, transport them very far away, and release them. They always came back eventually. Now apparently they don't bother trapping them and just run around chasing them. Last fall we had one that apparently took up residence on our road. It was making the rounds of the neighborhood getting into everyone's bird feeders and bird-seed supplies until we all took down the feeders. Must have hibernated nearby because as soon as the snow melted this spring it started happening again. Anyway one of the safety precautions for camping is to change into clean clothes after dinner and before going to bed, and secure the clothes you ate dinner in in your car. No food smells in your tent and you shouldn't have any problems. Most bears aren't all that eager to have a human encounter, either. They're just looking for food. |

| sherpes: | With family and other friends, we are at 26 and 29, on the south-western most edge of the campground, along the side of the walk-in tent sites. |

| medag: | does anybody know how big is campsite there. Can two small tents fit on one slot? Campground is full now and our friends would like to join us. |
| # Posted 2008-05-07 05:47:15 | |
| orienteeringmom: | They are a good size. We have had two tents on one site in the past. It just depends on the site as to be expected. |

| bl: | 'Hey George, check out'...
Indeed, looks like he's practicing snoring. I'll be entombed in a Lehigh dorm where peace & quiet is assured, far fm Mem Day rebel rousers:). It's been so very long since I've slept in such, novelty will be worth it, I expect. |
