ccsteve: Hey - I see you have splits - woo-hoo. (I didn't have splits until last spring when I got myself a split-taking watch;-)

The third split in the sprint is from gas turbine / Carl P, also local - I don't know the name, but think I would recognize him if I saw him. It looks like he'll push us to go a bit faster (esp since he says he's rusty and is still in front of us;-)

Looks like a good year in store for us.

turbodog: Yeah, I was worried that I would not be able to get my new watch to take the splits correctly, but after I got going, that was unfounded. It really helps to analyze which legs took longer, I just have to remember to hit the button!

On your second point, Carl has put together some very impressive early season runs. He smoked me by - I think - 10 minutes on the Red course at the Letchworth A-meet. So he's both fast and doesn't seem to have any trouble with tricky course layouts, and he's not in shape yet. If he keeps improving, I wouldn't be surprised if he starts challenging the top-tier folks!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to a really fun year!

gas_turbine: You guys were smoking me last year.
I started running ~2 miles a day this winter because
1) My doctor told me to get more exercise ...... or else. And indoor biking is too boring.
2) My company asks us all to run in the chase corporate challenge. I have to beat all the guys that I manage (luckily they don't run).
3) Our new dog loves to run.

I've been surprised that my course work has been pretty decent. There's been several occasions this year that dead reconing with the compass led me right to the control. (and needless to say, I was very surprised). I think I've been over-doing the shortcuts through the woods.

Steve - I said hi to you on the course yesterday. You were with two boys - we kind of did one leg in parallel.

As to being in shape - it's been years and years since then. I am extremely beat up today. My legs are killing me. Walking like an old man...

ccsteve: Well met on Attackpoint Carl;-)

Hmmm - that might have been when I stopped and was talking to a couple scouts, they weren't with me. (I had my son and daughter who at the time were late coming back on white, I had gone out to find them...)

As I said earlier - I'm sure I'd recognize you, I just have not matched the name yet - and it's great to see you on AP. (and see you found the ROC group)

On your condition - seemed fine to me... I met Randy at Digital Rochester's Networking event over at Rock Ventures and was a bit surprised. He said he didn't do it much, and then proceeded to whip out his harness and chalk bag...-)

Two years ago my goal was to be less than twice the time of the top people, and I like that I'm about 20% over in many cases now (still less than twice the time of the top person if he happens to run that day, but he's rather special and that's another story...)

I've got to move my fatigue point out, and improve my leg speed. I can keep up with some of the better runners for short durations, and when I've run past my limit, I appear to make less than rational realizations and judgments...

And so it'll be good to push each other;-)

turbodog: Carl, I stand by what I said before - a little more conditioning and you'll be running with the top group by the end of the year. Not everyone can finish in the top half of the bracket at their first A-meet!

You may want to check out some orienteering specific workout routines - like running while studying a map (or the morning newspaper), running through woods, being able to judge distances by sight, pace counting . . . things like that. Google orienteering training and I'm sure you'll get a bunch of stuff.

BTW I think you're sandbagging on the conditioning part - you're in better shape than you give yourself credit for!

gas_turbine: Still sore today. But it's a good sore (I suppose).

#  Posted 2008-05-02 04:59:17
gas_turbine: No longer sore. Ready for more.
