biddy: these are really good shep, thanks for putting them up
also youve gone through alot of the marshes on your marked routes, are they ok the run through?

#  Posted 2008-05-07 14:17:17
Shep: no wuckers!

the marshes are ok to run through in the spring! prob not so good in july... i still remember what wazza once told me, something like "run the way with the easiest navigation, not the easiest running". i reckon i take that a bit too literally sometimes but its the way i try to orienteer...

jotaigna: gosh Shep you are turbocharged with ancient wisdom these days...

Big D: thanks shep
what are vege boundaries like for navigation? i also notice in these maps there are cliffy rocky hillsides, then the flats have boulders marked sparsely in them. are there many rocks around these (ie are they there as an indication of rockyness)?
never heard wuckers before

#  Posted 2008-05-08 14:38:04
Shep: vege boundaries arent always easy to see for aussies, it can be a change between fir trees

and pine

in aussie we call everything with needles a pine tree... if its the difference between pine trees and oak/beech/birch then its a bit more obvious, and often the vege boundaries mark the edge of a felled area.

i'd say in general in gothenburg its cliffy/rocky on the slopes, and up on top if theres a boulder mapped then its prob gonna stand out.

just thought i'd add that i think you juniors will be staying in the clubouse in the red circle in the north west of this map (right click and save it to get a closer look)...

robplow: most veg b'dries in Sweden are due to clear felling - especially when they are straight lines. So they tend to indicate a dramatic difference in age/height of the trees. Even if it is white ( regrowth over 1.5m will be mapped as white, or green) on both sides of the veg b'dry they can often be seen from a distance. if you are running mature forest towards a vb - look up and you will see it.

Rocks - basically the whole of scandinavia is a rock that was covered by glaciers 10000 years ago. the glaciers scraped out complex patterns of knolls and depressions in the rock. You can see which way the glaciers were moving on most maps. On the above map from NNW to SSE. On hills the leading edge relative to the movement of the glacier (ie the NNW edge on the above map) is
generally gentle and smooth but the trailing edge (the SSE slope) is steep and rocky.

When the glaciers retreated the depressions filled up with water/mud to form the lake/marshes that are so common.

The steep rocky hillsides are very rocky but the flatter areas are basically just bare rock overgrown with blueberry bushes. In some places it is still bare rock with a few trees - this is what the Finns map as grey. In Sweden these bare rock areas may be ignored or mapped as yellow, depending on the mapper.

The scattered boulders in the flatter area are usually rocks that were picked up by the glacier and then dumped randomly as they melted. So they are sort of free standing. They don't tend to indicate rocky ground underfoot that is hard to run (at least no worse than usual).

You need to be a bit careful with small boulders - there are more on the ground than the map and the mappers tend to be pretty strict about lower limits. So if the mapper says boulders are 1m (or 1.5m) minimum then a 0.9m (or1.4m) boulder will not be mapped - even if it is prominent.

Hilary: Not sure yet Shep about where the team is staying for the official training camp :). I haven't heard from Mats!

#  Posted 2008-05-09 14:41:01
Shep: yeah sorry i meant to get back to you Hilary. Mats is waiting to hear from Uven... he seems optimistic. otherwise i'm checking out IK Majornas club house at Skatås, waiting for an answer...

Hilary: Mats says he has head from the club and it is ok. Thanks for your help Shep. Do you know how big this place is? The map looks ok too.
