Rosstopher: Spikes can make a very big difference for track running. you may decide not get shoes because you don't want to pay for them, but they will help you run faster if you do get them. Mentally they really help you run on your toes. I was skeptical until I wore a pair and now I'm very much a believer. I have a pair of steeplechase spikes that I love, because they are very breathable and light. Just be very sure to warm down a * lot* after races because it's a big strain on the calves.

Kat: How much is a "very big difference" in terms of time gained? Just curious.

szurcher: Well, if I wanted to wear spikes, I would have had to do some training in them before running a race. If I were to wear them for the first time for the 5km race I think I would destroy my calves. Maybe next year.

lucky luke: i agree absolutely with rosstopher. it's a different feeling of running. "a big difference"? i would say at least 22.5 sec on your 5k! good idea to wear them before a race, or even twice. after the first spiked trainings i always have sore calves! if you buy not the lightest ones, you can use them also for cross country, just change the spikes (9, 12, 16, 18mm) - and don't forget to change em back when you go back to the track ;-)
