| Terry: | I tried Foldit when David Baker came to give a talk at UC Berkeley. He set up a competition for us. I was pretty excited about the game at first, but then I found the interface unsatisfying. It's not tactile enough. It takes a long time to move the main chain, and I couldn't figure out how rotate around a particular bond. It would be nice if it were wii controlled. Not that I have ever used a wii or even seen one.
I totally love this idea, though. I just had an interview at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle. I think they are going to make me an offer, but it will only be for a post-doc salary (like maybe $50K). Have you heard anything about that place, good or bad? Back at the Sjolander lab, Kimmen said she could start paying me back in February, but the paperwork is stuck in bureaucracy so I'm still a volunteer. We are doing the CASP protein folding competition which just started Monday. We have a super-collaboration with the Baker lab and a couple others; I think it's possible we'll win. Except that our lab is dreadfully understaffed at the moment so we are dreadfully behind. It didn't help that I took Thursday and Friday off to go to Seattle. |

| barb: | Stuck in bureaucracy? Hm. I don't like that she said she'd start paying, hasn't come through on that, but is relying on you to help with this folding competition. But I'm still glad you're getting the experience.
ISB was the first effort I remember really pulling together a big systems biology organization. And the names are big - Lee Hood, anyway. It is definitely a place I've always been intrigued by, and I think it's a great place for your next step, because you'll be able to leapfrog into the latest hot stuff. I'm looking forward to hearing more about the job if they offer it to you. I think you should send your comments (constructive suggestions as well as praise) about Foldit to the Foldit people. Especially if you're collaborating with his lab. I love the idea of Foldit too. I love that it's cast as a game. I love the idea of wii control. Is there a 3D interface to the program? That might be nice too. |
