| GrantM: | Interesting question Luke. By going around you ran approx 250m further, and saved about 30m of climb. An old rule of thumb was that for every 10m of climb you save you can add 100m to the distance. Scotty always contended that this was too much and that about 70m is more realistic. So using Scotty's number you could add about 210m in distance for 30m less climb. Which means the over route should be quicker if that was the only thing to consider.
The route around seems to have a couple of advantages: you are on a track for most of the leg so you can run faster than through the bush; the navigation is simple; and the approach into the control seems easier. I suppose you could have run past your first control if you took the over route. Did you have any particular reason for choosing your route? |

| Luke P: | ummmm. well i thought that if i tried the hill i would crash(exhaustion wise) and walk/stride most of the up, and i thought that if i set a good pace on the track(which i did) i would be better off.
i was also experimenting a bit. ian and i had been running more or less the same pace the whole way. he was slightly faster than me on the ups and i was slightly on the downs. we got to 14 at exactly the same time... so i thought that as we were going approx the same speed, it would be a good determination of the fastest route. turns out we both got to 15 at the same time!! |

| Georg: | hey grant doesn't it really depend on the person how much further u can go for each 10 m of climb? coz some ppl are way better at hills than others, eg. i know for sure i'm really bad at hills and always walk way too much.. |
