Bender: Too bad we missed you tonight. A bunch of us went out to East Side Mario's after this evenings GHO training session. Had we'd know you'd be near by we could have extended the invite.

hammer: She was invited but elected instead to take me out for lunch for my Birthday!

Bash: Thanks - I'm sorry I missed the get-together too. Meridian had included me on the invite list, but Bent and I had made plans to meet friends for a yummy Thai dinner in Toronto. (As if I needed any more food this month!!!) Plus as Hammer points out, there was his birthday lunch earlier today. ;-)

jtorranc: Changing topics, does the decrease in mentions of knee troubles indicate that they've become normal or that the corrective measures are working? And, speaking of the corrective measures, you've done lots of stuff that may have made your legs stronger but no "leg strength exercises" since Friday. I let three days slide but, until and unless you tell me to chill, not even your course setting a Thomass justified another day of silence.

Bash: One the great things about an online training log is that I've been cringing all morning, waiting for someone to call me out regarding those leg strength exercises. And if I hadn't bribed Hammer yesterday, he would have been on my case about skipping Tuesday speed intervals as well. My pathetic explanation (although not an acceptable excuse) is the Christmas season, which is moving a lot faster than I am. I started writing cards on Monday, for example.

I totalled my O hours for the year this morning, and was horrified to see that I averaged just one 30-minute strength session per week since March. I'm supposed to be doing upper body, legs and core, but clearly I've been spending too much time on the fun stuff! Anyway, leg strength exercises shall be posted before bedtime tonight!.

Bash: Oh, and about the knee... Although the cartilage damage is of a type that is unlikely to heal, it seems that the joint has settled into a new position of equilibrium so that my lower leg no longer feels as if it is moving independently of the rest of me. I think there was a mixture of acute and chronic damage causing pain in the early fall, and the acute part has healed. To manage the chronic pain, I've found 3 things that seem to help:
- Neoprene knee brace with patella hole. (Apparently, this is less about support than about warmth and proprioception - making me more aware of the position of my knee.)
- Leg strength exercises (ahem!!)
- Sleeping with a pillow between the knees. (Physiotherapists sell specialized, knee-shaped foam pads for this purpose, but a regular pillow has put an end to those mornings where I awoke with a painful, dislocated-feeling knee.)

I also haven't done any long runs other than Raid The Hammer, which caused a lot of hip pain. I think the next step is to get my sports chiro, Thumbs-of-Death, to work on my ankle and hip, since the gimpy knee seems to have increased the work for my other joints.

Anyway, so far so good. I am worried about the knee-twisting falls that I've had so many times in my life - but I think that my fear has enhanced my skill at staying upright! A few months ago, I was imagining what I might do with my time to make up for the loss of sports from my life - everything from writing books to running for political office. (Yikes!!!) So I appreciate everything I do now more than I ever did.
