| bubo: | Thanks for the sneak pre-view of todayīs middle distance course - Iīm still eagerly waiting to hear some more from the Team Trials.
Has the Canadian team selection been official yet (I havenīt seen anything about that since last week) or will you have more trials? |

| wilsmith: | The Canadian team is all set now.
Men: Nick Duca (middle) Patrick Goeres (sprint, long, relay) Brent Langbakk (sprint) Mike Smith (middle, long, relay) Wil Smith (middle, long, relay) Jon Torrance (sprint) Women: Sandy Hott (middle, long, relay) Louise Oram (sprint, middle, long, relay) Charlotte MacNaughton (long) Heather Smith (sprint) Victoria Smith (sprint, middle, relay) I think there may end up being the odd change here and there as far as who runs what. I am imagining that very few people (probably nobody) on the other teams will be running all 4 events, so it makes you wonder about the wisdom of one of our runners electing to do that. Also, although Mike and I did well enough in the long test races, I am not sure that we're totally super-keen on racing that distance in CZE. The middle and relay seem to be higher-priority, and the long will interfere with those (the qualification may hurt the middle quality, and anyone running the long final will be hurting on the relay day- this will probably affect team composition for most other countries as well). When I left, Eddie had run about 34-35 minutes; none of the other Americans were under 40 minutes, but Eric Bone was still out in the forest as a late starter. I expect William Hawkins, Nick Duca, Brian Graham, and Jon Torrance (among others) to be quite capable of fast times on that course though. |

| bubo: | OK - thanks.
I guess the selections were without major surprises then (and I suppose Emily Kemp is doing only the JWOC and that Hans Fransson has declined...). |

| wilsmith: | Correct x2 |

| bubo: | See you in July then - since by some mysterious scheme Iīve been selected to be team leader for the US team at WOC ;) (Tom H canīt take time off his job the week before O-ringen starts). |

| wilsmith: | Those Swedes, taking over the world one country at a time.... Will be fun - see you there! |

| ndobbs: | congrats to all concerned...
I might be slow to go so far to only run a sprint which is liable to be a cross-country race... guh |

| wilsmith: | Yeah, me too. But then again, I'm not a sprinter.
The guys we've got lined up for the sprint are indeed quite fast (faster sprinters than you or I by far), and if they focus their energy on one discipline, I really think they can come out at an advantage over a runner who has to prepare for two or three or (gak - four!) disciplines. And if you're coming from one of the "other" nations (a group that includes Canada, USA, and Ireland among others), having as many advantages as possible with you on the starting line is a very good thing. Given the choice, I would prefer by far to race in one qualifier and one final, rather than race in two or three qualifiers and zero finals.... |

| ndobbs: | of course :) |

| bubo: | Well, at least you get to run for 14-15 minutes.
There have been cases of sprinters ('real sprinters') going half-way around the world to the Olympics only to get disqualified for a false start in the 100 M heats :( |
