| Heffer: | Ideally if you are eating a balanced, varied diet you shouldn't require supplements at all. The body breaks down, absorbs, and uses nutrients best if they're a part of food, and not just extra ones thrown in. Foods generally contain other substances to ease the consumption and use of these nutrients, that aren't always contained in tablets.
Also, there is only a certain amount of vitamins and minerals that your body requires, and once you go over this amount they will just get rid of them, and not hang onto them as there is no storage mechanism. So you'll basically urinating all that money away when you take too much. Generally you should be defficient in a mineral, vitamin or anything else before you resort to supplements. You should be aiming to have: - Lots of fresh fruit and veggies. Don't boil veggies because that gets rid of a lot of the goodness in them. - Animal products - this includes meat and dairy and eggs. These are important because meat products contain complete protiens, while plants contain part protiens. They alos have iron, calcium etc etc. Good for you! - Have as much polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats as you do saturated. I know this is hard to achieve without knowing exactly what is in your food, but simply, the less processed a food is the better. - Drink pleanty of water. The exception to this is often protien supplements in the form of whey powder that can be made into drinks. These are good if you're looking for extra protein, particuarly in strength building, but not necessarily endurance training. If you are interested I can give you more information on these mixes, including where to get them. But I would advise trying to get your general diet sorted out first! Hope that helps, don't hesitate to ask questions ^_^ |

| El Lukeo: | Yes that is what i was thinking...But not being a super serious athlete i am not hell-bent on having the perfect food pyramid (this takes a lot of effort and careful monitoring). My meals (essp dinner) vary a fair bit from day to day, for example the days i have sausages, im sure im having waaaayyyyy too much fat and stuff, and other days i have a lot more salad than i need. so i figure by taking some vitamins/ sodium etc i will be topping up the stuff i have not had enough of that day (or will not have enough of, as i have them in the morning), whilst still pissing out the ones that i dont really need. Im not trying to defend the supplements... im just bringing some possible points of interest to the table.

| Heffer: | No, discussion is good!
While it is hard to try and adhere to the food guidelines at first, once you get into the swing of things it's not so hard. Not that I can really talk, my diet isn't as good as I'd probably like it to be. You don't need to be a super serious athlete to have a good diet. It will help you in all areas of life, not just your training. I think the key point is really just loads of fresh fruit and veggies. It's not as hard as it sounds. eg. If you usually have a large lunch of the one thing, try cutting down the size of it and having an apple instead. That will probably bring more balance into what you eat. Put a chopped banana ontop of cereal, or into yoghurt. Add another veggie to salads or a stir fry. All easily achieved and great for you! |

| El Lukeo: | Yea true. Has anybody ever told you that you should be a motivational speaker. along with your "character building" philosophy... (essp lukes a dweeb, yet that seems to be a complement of sorts these days :D).
but srsly: yea i see what you mean. gawd i cant wait to lose the braces and eat apples again. I am forced to love bananas instead. yea i think that my diet is not an unhealth one : i rarely have takeaway etc and i would meet my fruit and veg requirements most days. I also just had the thought that taking supplements is also phsycological aid. if i believe that i am healthy, then i may train harder, longer and push more in events, as i might feel less excuse to not perform well...? yes? or possibly it could work the opposite... i feel healthier and thus have a lesser urge to train as much... |

| Heffer: | Hmmm, in terms of a placebo effect it could work I guess.... belief that you're healthier etc. Would be interesting to study....
Anyways, I should be a motivational speeker! Can you see me on Sunrise? "I can help you achieve your life goal in just 7 easy steps! All it takes is attitude and self belief!" I'll be making milions! |

| Heffer: | You know, if I put motivation into a capsule, people would buy them by the truckload! I know you would!
I could make a whole line! Motivation, esteem, confidence etc etc etc. May as well quit my degree now and get started! |
| # Posted 2008-05-27 19:51:47 | |
| El Lukeo: | haha yea it actually would work. the brand "nutrient water" claims to put things in its drinks, from the standards like energy, to "immunity" "immortality" and "up lift" there is also one to do with motivation too. not sure why you would buy immunity, when immortality is the same price...
Just put a few vitamins in your capps, then do some biased surveys and claim that it really does work for the desired thing (motiv, est, conf etc) and you really could sell them!! |

| Heffer: | It's brilliant! I'll give you 2% of the profits Luke, 1% for assistance in the product, and 1% for being a dweeb! |
| # Posted 2008-05-28 05:05:02 | |
| El Lukeo: | haha thanks for that i appreciate it!!
BTW i went swimming this morning and had a barroca drink just before... it felt like i had drank a litre of sea water...not quite, but still i dont think it was very good. |

| George: | speaking of vitamin supplements etc, what do you think of powerade/gatorade/staminade? Are they worth it and which is the best? |
| # Posted 2008-05-30 14:47:04 | |
| kryso: | powerade tastes the nicest :) |
| # Posted 2008-05-30 17:21:13 | |
| Heffer: | I like Staminade, I just think it tastes the best, not too sweet.
They can be worth it after a long run, as a quick source of carbohydrates and electrolytes, but you should always match the amount of sports drink you have with water. ie. one liter of powerade and one liter of water. |
| # Posted 2008-05-31 11:25:49 | |
| George: | oh... if I'm going to have any I usually drink it a while before running rather than afterwards... |
| # Posted 2008-05-31 14:35:45 | |
| El Lukeo: | ...litre... :P |
| # Posted 2008-06-01 18:20:24 | |
| Heffer: | *sigh* stupid spelling.
I'm not sure that drinking them before hand is really the way to go. You should hopefully have been eating well enough between exercises that your energy sources are quite well stocked. Then the drink is a quick way to gain some of that back after, as it isn't as hard to digest. Obviously though, your body prefers to diges things properly, so eating real food (not energy drinks) is better overall, but slower. |

| El Lukeo: | ...diges... :P
but yea um i agree with you. mum went crazy at my this morning when i told her i have been taking berocca for the last week. she reckons it might throw my INR (blood thinness) levels out and muck up the medications i take for my heart. actually i think that she might think that i am an alcoholic or something...hmmm |
| # Posted 2008-06-02 13:07:02 | |
| Heffer: | Well she may think that because you are! HAHAHAHA
No, I'm kidding. Probably best to really check things out before you take them Luke, I forgot about the other stuff you shove into your body to stop you from dying already. |
