falcon: We see bears fairly frequently on our runs around here, just not that close. Usually Regnly gets a bead on them and takes off after them when they're 100m+ away. We haven't had a bear mauling in our area for a long time. They have plenty of food and usually mind their own business, even when they see humans.

theshadow: our bears run off too. We had something similar happen at one of our local meets. At the Miles Canyon lookout there is a parking lot with a steep slope down. There was a bear on the slope just below where we could see him but only 30m away and upwind. He couldn't smell us (quite a few people) and we couldn't see him. Finally, we scared the %^&%& out of each other. Turns out he had been practically chased around the whole course as various people had spotted him at different spots.
