fthfl stwrd rudy: how's the bike commuting going?

#  Posted 2008-05-30 06:54:31
MDeVoll: Funny you should ask. Now that my kids are finishing school this week and staying with a nanny at home for the next couple months, I'm going to try riding the bike into work a few times a week. I'll let you know by this time next Friday.

Yukon King: it's ride-yer-bike-to-work week here in Vancouver. I saw an ad in the skytrain...preaching to the converted? or maybe its a get-fit thing, don't just ride the skytrain? anyhow, a good thing however it is framed...

fthfl stwrd rudy: are you allowed to bring your bike on the skytrain? you can bring your bike on metro busses and rail here.

MDeVoll: I'm not riding my bike to Vancouver, if that's what you're suggesting. Sheesh. :)

#  Posted 2008-05-30 21:34:34
Yukon King: yeah, the bikes can go on the train, & they have buses w racks & a way to ID those lines/buses on the online schedules to route-plan (I believe).
MdV, I agree, just Friday is too little time to ride all that way, I shoulda given you more warning :)

fthfl stwrd rudy: if i had enough work in vancouver, i'd ride there! Even if it took a few weeks.

MDeVoll: Finally tried commuting to work on my bike. 15 minutes to campus, 15 home. Went well enough for the commute, but now that I'm here at work, I'm sweaty and feeling gross. Need to figure out how to do this while showing up to work clean and cool.

Yukon King: hmmm...if you work in a cubicle you're totally set, all you need to do is bring yer work-clothes plus a wet washcloth in a baggy, strip down, sponge off, dance around nekkid for a few seconds to get dry & comfy, dress, & you're done. I'm pretty sure I've seen Wally do this in the Dilbert strip, so it should be fine. (seriously, your workplace isn't yet idyllically set up w showers etc? curses...)
in other biking news, D took his bike to the shop to get it (professionally) tuned & a new seat selected & stuck on, & he was mumbling about trying a partial commute ie a few days a week is what he meant (25 km each way) when I said how about taking a bus partway to ease into it, or so you can do it every day? which would be a fitness thang, AND it could carve off some of the more intensely annoying aspects of the bus commute, such as the community shuttle that sometime is there to p/u passengers for South Terminal at its hourly p/u spot, and Sometimes It's NOT There (off smoking pot? protecting the free world a la 007? no-one knows). Or another annoying part is the fisticuffs (mildly putting it) that frantic passengers get into periodically over access to the already packed bus on other parts of his route. or at least it might eliminate one or more of the extremely inefficient transfers he would normally make... we'll see...plus, I got the idea from AP!!! I think BL mentioned getting on the bus halfway thru his bike-commute for some reason...pace-counting, bus-bike commutes, will the brilliance never end? :)

Yukon King: wait, you work at a university-type thing...you gotta have some semi-reasonable options of some sort for self-cleansing, yes? College students are getting dirty all the time, & stinky too!

#  Posted 2008-06-03 01:10:41
MDeVoll: College students have the luxury of staying stinky, though, so pooh-pooh to your logic. : ) I do have options, like showering at the Athletic Facility. For some bizarre reason, there's also a shower in the men's bathroom in a nearby building, which I might be able to take advantage of. (Actually the reason's not bizarre--the building used to be Health Services and I don't need to speculate on why the Health Services building has a shower.) But the added time for cleaning up on campus really doesn't appeal to me (get here, go to shower, clean up, get back). I did cool down and feel relatively fresh. I think I just need to give myself the 10-15 minutes to cool down and change before I open my door for business.

fthfl stwrd rudy: bring a couple of washcloths, and a bar of deodorant to work for the 20 second cleanup/freshener. possibly keep a couple of clean shirts at the office to change into.
