gail: That's a lot of points for not being fat!

Cristina: Yep! The test is great if you're a runner... pretty damn rough if you're a weight-lifter.

If I didn't have <25 then I'd have to use my abdominal circumference measurement. I'd probably have to contract some nasty tropical disease or really hungry worms to get down to the 29" max point circumference.

jjcote: Is that based on your height? I can imagine that some people (and not necessarily tall ones) have a measurement larger than that just due to pelvic width. Doesn't matter how much you get in shape, you can't shrink bone. Weird.

Cristina: Nope, all women have the same scale, same with all men. It's supposed to be based on the research that says that abdominal fat (measured by circumference an inch or so above the top of the pelvic bones) is an indicator for heart disease. That research showed that the correlation held regardless of height... so, that's what we get. There are a lot of people who could never get max points no matter what they did. Hardly seems fair on a "fitness" test.

I say that if they're going to score us on heart disease risk factors that I ought to get points for being a non-smoker. Though they'd probably take away points for my family medical history, so maybe that's not such a good idea.

peggyd: Can you do girlie pushups? I'm pretty sure I couldn't even do 31of those. (Good thing I just have to take a poly, no fitness test.)

Cristina: No girlie pushups, though my pushups are hardly Marine-quality, I'm sure.

cmpbllv: I think it's so cool that you get points for BMI. I have to say that the weigh-in is my most dreaded event of the Army PT test...it isn't worth points, but if you don't make the screening weight, they come after you with a tape measure. I'm glad I'm old, now...the screening weight when I was in my 20s was a little too close to my normal weight for comfort!

I will do many things to ensure no one ever gets a tape measure near my hips!
