| Cristina: | I'm pretty sure I get exposed to much worse every time I eat out...
I get that some people are grossed out or actually are concerned about their health, and it would be nice to be able to assuage them, but I don't personally care. I drink straight from the V8 bottles, after all. |

| Samantha: | :) I use cups when I get water, just because it's easiest for me. And I would prefer if people didn't chug from the bottles, but I can get over a few of them doing it. And pouring it into your mouth seems like a fine solution. Just don't take water off the courses! I won't carry it! |

| Rosstopher: | Is there a way to appease all comers? I mean really. One jug marked * drink me* that people can swig out of, and one marked * pour me* that must be used with cups?
There seem to be two camps here, let's make everyone happy. |

| peggyd: | I'm with ya, Sam. I just don't want to have to carry my own. If other people want to do it, for whatever reason, go ahead. Just don't take away my water on the course and make me carry it.
Guess we're old school. |

| peggyd: | Oh, and dirt I can handle (even a used cup doesn't gross me out too much) ... but last year at a local meet when there were ticks in the cups--well, that was disgusting. |
| # Posted 2008-05-31 10:53:31 | |
| Cristina: | ticks = protein? |
| # Posted 2008-05-31 19:35:44 | |
| Samantha: | ew, yeah ticks and big bugs would get to me. I think I do drink out of used cups sometimes because it's hard to tell if it's new or not... |

| coach: | I think it's interesting that the women think it's OK, but lots of guys are grossed out.... |
| # Posted 2008-06-01 01:00:50 | |
| Cristina: | Women deal with the grossness of men every day. We're used to it. |
| # Posted 2008-06-01 02:37:38 | |
| Samantha: | we're just more hardcore. Wimpy men. |
| # Posted 2008-06-01 02:45:04 | |
| Wyatt: | I'm 50% cups, 50% throw the water at my head, some for drinking some for cooling down. I definitely pick up used cups sometimes, and _may_ rinse if there's a lot of dirt in it. If some people are really concerned, can't those competitors carry their own water...? |
| # Posted 2008-06-01 08:49:03 | |
| walk: | Water? you mean there was water there? Boy - some people sure are picky. |
| # Posted 2008-06-01 09:08:15 | |
| Acampbell: | Yep men are wimps. They also can't deal with being sick very well so i guess that is why they are extra scared about this topic. |

| eddie: | Allison, how many days of training did you miss this year due to sickness? How many days has Sandra missed due to sickness? Do you think she would rather have those days back? Swisscheese missed the Long Final at WOC last year due to a water-borne sickness (even though he earned that spot in the qualifier earlier in the week). Do you suppose he was disappointed about that? Or was he just being a wimp? Maybe he should have just sucked it up and run on that 95-degree day suffering from dehydration due to diarrhea. If you could prolong your orienteering season with some simple precautions like washing your hands or not drinking after strangers, wouldn't you do it? Its not always effective, but it sure can't hurt.
Wyatt, people using the valuable drinking water to pour on themselves (or washing their cups out?!?) is one of the main reasons I think people should be using cups - i.e. to prevent spilling. You are less likely to spill when pouring into a cup than trying to aim for your mouth while holding the jug over your head. If you want to pour water on yourself, can't you carry your own? I'm with Sam too...I don't wanna carry *anything* when I'm running, and if people are bathing or doing the dishes with the drinking water that leaves less for people to drink. Think of the poor schlubs that had to carry the water out there, and the poor dehydrated schlubs behind you on the course. I'm getting up at the buttcrack of dawn tomorrow (er, today now) to go put out water on courses for a local meet so folks can race without carrying their own. Its going to be hot tomorrow. I hope the runners appreciate the water (and cups) and don't waste it. |

| Cristina: | I like Ross' idea. Not sure if it would fly in reality, but it's totally worth trying. Still looking for some funny signs, though. |

| jtorranc: | Personally, I think using some of your theoretical allowance per water stop not for drinking but for cooling or rinsing the salt out of your eyes, if you have that problem when running, is legitimate. Not that I know what, if anything, the rules have anything to say about what uses of the supplied water are permitted. |

| bl: | I use a used cup for water so as not to add even more to the plastic trash burden. I don't worry about germs...maybe I should? I doubt it. Am always getting licked by the dogs etc etc. I've spent time in third world countries which indeed is an eye-opener & worthy of caution - I regard Americans as excessively hygenic. I have used cups in my garage, any takers?:) |

| Samantha: | I figure if hanging out with 40 7-year-olds 5 days a week doesn't kill me, then I should be ok drinking out of used cups. These kids spit in my face when they talk to me (not on purpose) and sneeze on me all day long. I think it builds up my immune system :) |
| # Posted 2008-06-03 02:30:44 | |
| Rosstopher: | I think it's pretty clear that we all have some misconceptions when it comes down to exactly how the immune system works, and what is or is not dangerous. Though I don't think it matters who is "right" here -- even if there was overwhelming proof that this practice was completely safe, it would still bother some. The bottom line is that it makes some people truly uncomfortable to drink out of a bottle that someone else has put their mouth on. We should be sympathetic, and let this guide our judgment when we get to a water stop. |
