| walk: | Bob and I did a similar hike a "few" years ago starting at Nikko, east and north a bit from their hike. One day we went up a trail through woods near a ski trail where we were going up through a jungle with a tatty old rope for a hand rail on the washed out trail. I remember climbing up and over all sorts of tree roots and it being quite vertical. Bob remembers "hiking in Japan being super steep slogs getting up the starting elevation and then easing once you got to a ridge line or tree line."
Sounds like a fine hike - we had much better weather - and shelter, namely nice ryokans with super hot baths. |

| bomfunk: | yeah, it was pretty sweet. The best was the cartoon map showing a happy family on the ridgeline. |
