I just received some 10Mila bulletins in the mail via the USOF office. April 24-25, 2004. Are there any plans for a US team that I should forward the info to?

Hi Clare,

I'm sure there is interest in the 10Mila in principle, but there are some hard obstacles to overcome which make it virtually certain that there won't be a US-based team this year. The main obstacle is that the timing is not good. The next obstacle is the 10-person team. This year at the Jukola, there was quite a noticeable difference between our first team's seventh runner and the second team's best runner (until the Kiwis showed up, that is, to fill the second team's vacancies). So, even though it is quite reasonable to get 10+ people interested in the trip, you would probably have to face a variable level of team members' fitness, which can be somewhat discouraging to some.

But it's great that the organizers of such an important event seem to be paying attention to what we in North Amerca are doing. So, maybe next year (2005...) We'll see how this year's Jukola goes.

I realized in looking through this that they added a new category this year that I could see attracting a US Team. This is the Veteran's Relay. It is 3 short daytime legs. The team must include three runners - minimum age 50, total age at least 165 and at least one woman. It appears to be a trial for this year.

I'll hold onto the info for now, unless someone says they want it.
