| Cristina: | I often do this because concrete sidewalks are harder than asphalt roads. But, I only do it on low-traffic roads and always get out of the way (hop up to the sidewalk) if there are people coming. |

| bbrooke: | I held my ground in the bike lane today (I was feeling stubborn and ornery), and the oncoming woman ran out into the middle of the road instead of onto the sidewalk.
I avoid road running at all costs -- trails are so much more scenic! and fume-free! and softer! and ubiquitous around here! So I guess there's a lot about the road-runner mindset that I probably won't ever understand or relate to...(including their speediness). :-) |

| jjcote: | I wonder how much asphalt deforms under a footstrike. Seriously — I don't doubt that it happens, but I have no idea how much it is. Seems like it much be orders of magnitude less than the deformation of the shoe sole, though. It would be interesting to know whether a runner can tell the difference between smooth sidewalk and smooth asphalt without being able to see. |

| Cristina: | I *think* that I can feel the difference, but I've never tried a blind test... I wouldn't be surprised if it was largely mental.
This article claims that concrete is Very Bad (tm) for running and that it is 10x harder than asphalt. I think there needs to be some blindfolded running in Laramie in August. |

| jjcote: | 10x harder is totally believable. But something that deforms a millimeter under a 10 ton load compared to something that deforms a millimeter under a one ton load doesn't seem like it's going to make much difference to somebody in running shoes.
What does it say about concrete culverts? |

| Rosstopher: | Asphalt is getting to be too expensive for repaving ( so says the USA today) and so, in the future, road runners are going to need to learn how to run on trails, and we'll all need to get mountain bikes -- oh, and flying cars too. |
