| Yukon King: | D is commuting by bike as well !! but it's a lot cooler here, hence less sweaty...and why is there continued flood warnings? isnt that a Really Really Big river out there with infinite capacity - obviously not, huh? what is going on? there's no snow-melt going in there? is it just that the entire continent is covered with rain and it is all going into that river? |

| MDeVoll: | Heavy heavy rains north of us. See the news for the Iowa flooding. The rivers all feed into the Mississippi, which does have infinite capacity--but it's not just vertical capacity, it's also horizontal (i.e., flood plains). Stupid people (not counting farmers for whom floods bring rich soil) build businesses and McMansions in the flood plains, and get flooded.
Locally we've also had more rain this year than any on record, so lots of flash flooding and minor river/stream flooding. |

| Yukon King: | that Iowa City (oops, Cedar Rapids, I'm thinking now) thing is pretty wild. Some people who blogged a road-trip there last year (old hometown for one of them) with photos etc were just logging that a certain photo they took of a bridge (from another bridge) was all, ALL ten+ feet UNDER...and those were big bridges too...very graphic! |
