Discussion: White Mountains rock!

cmpbllv: I was really missing the White Mountains this weekend - did the World Champs rogaine there awhile back and loved the variation in terrain. This weekend's adventure was far too much foliage for my taste...I was fantasizing about AZ and OR for most of the time we were out there.

Any chance that some of the White Mtns might get mapped for an A-Meet some day? I'd love running there again.

Cristina: All weekend I was thinking about how we need to get that terrain mapped for an A-meet/WRE. It's just great. I have no idea how feasible that is, or whether the club would go for it given the difficult logistics. Guess we should try, if we can find a good mapper willing to spend some time in the middle of nowhere. Of course, it is beautiful nowhere.

cmpbllv: Don't all the best O-maps seem to be in the middle of nowhere? But I guess that's a good thing, or they'd get overtaken by condos and golf courses!

jjcote: Except Harriman.

smittyo: We missed you at Mt. Pinos. But I suppose the White Mountains is a pretty darn good excuse. And it meant more relay points for me!

Cristina: I would have preferred to go to Mt Pinos... but it was quite a bit further and no one else from Tucson was going. I'd never been to the White Mountains, so it was nice to go. Though now I have blisters on the bottom of my feet and can't run. Probably wouldn't have happened with three sprints and a relay...

BTW, some people think our clubs should do a better job of deconflicting our schedules, but by that they mean, "We always do third Sunday, so you shouldn't." I don't agree with that strategy one bit, though I do agree that we should probably communicate about bigger events that are more likely to draw people from far. White Mountains *and* Mt Pinos seems like the best way to go.

Swampfox: You should talk to Brooke. There is some guy down in Colorado who apparently thinks he can make perfectly decent O' maps, hundreds of km2 at a time, in quite short order, by using all the latest technologies. And, who knows. Maybe he can.

You could perhaps get the entire White Mountains mapped by the end of the summer if you got him started soon!

cmpbllv: True on Harriman - but the White Mtns are so much more runnable. (By this point in the year, I've had it with mountain laurel and rocks...guess that's what I get for living at West Point!)

Swampfox - "Perfectly decent?" Oh my...along with some "prefectly satisfied" orienteers after the race, I'm sure!

jjcote: I think his plan is to serve these maps up to the uninitiated multitudes who don't know any better, and by doing so delight them with the prospect of further participation in our sport.
