| MikeS: | ...hope you manage to keep it going! Pound says you can't though ;-) |

| Lard: | Oh, I thought you elite guys did this without thinking. |
| # Posted 2008-06-19 18:01:45 | |
| Lard: | When were you last screened Oli? |
| # Posted 2008-06-19 18:04:47 | |
| Nails: | Balls, I never do any core or strength training, core is the new buzz word and its overrated. run in terrain lots and you get strong running in terrain. do lots of core exercises and you get good at core exercises (and admittedly maybe a little bit stronger when you run in terrain.) |

| OJ: | Last screened a couple of months ago and all was well. But since then I haven't been able to fit in any of the usual circuits or climbing sessions, mainly because there has been so much racing going on.
I'm really bad at doing the day-to-day stretching/core strength sort of stuff - I've always been more of an old-school runner like Nails. But unlike Nails, I do think it would help me, it's mainly that I'm too lazy to do it. It's not necessarily about getting stronger at running, it's more about injury prevention and improving running economy. I know 10 mins a day is almost nothing, but it is progress in the right direction! |

| Nails: | Ah yes i'm not saying that you shouldn't do any strength exercises. You've obviously got some serious problems which need sorted out ;o)
What i'm against is the attitude that strength/core exercises are a necessary session. Lard 'Assumes' we all do it? In my opinion if you do a good quality 'strength/terrain' run you get just as much benefit. As you've pointed out your aim here is to sort out your niggles (jessie) so fair enough, I'm not arguing with that. Better still though i've got a good idea which might be better..... Instead you could go for a 'hike' each day, which as we know is a proper and serious workout. Oh and the pound, I don't think you'll be getting it until you suceed at 'every day' until WOC. |

| hel vino: | I agree some people have definitely taken the strength & conditioning too far. Fiona Lothian's point was that if you are doing 10 hours of running a week it's not worth doing 5 more hours of running & you'll get more benefit from doing some S+C.
I believe in doing an absolute minimum of 30-40 miles a week running/orienteering before worrying about adding in any serious S+C programme. + a little maintenance during the season. 10 minutes a day is a good effort. It only takes about 3 minutes to do all my physio exercises usually. Lard is a veteran now so he is allowed to log "hiking" :) any bouts of cycling of less than 20 min can also go in the lamo category along with 1hr+ weights sessions that would take any normal person about 30min (presumably they are logging breaks to chat, posture, eat cake..) also badminton. & I guess nordic walking which I have logged once or twice! |

| candyman: | Hmm, all things in proportion would seem a better rule of thumb to me than a hard and fast 'no strength and conditioning' unless you do a minimum of 30-40 miles a week.
When I have been doing 30-40 miles a week with a balance of hills, speed, endurance etc. i found that my body responded well to some focussed strength training especially squats with free weights. |

| Nails: | no no no I have nothing against logging anything you want, its your log put what you want in it, i'm not judging. I was just suggesting to OJ that 'hiking' has been proven to be better for building running endurance and strength than....well... running. |

| candyman: | I thought it was walking up stairs in a pub with pints... |
| # Posted 2008-06-19 22:05:19 | |
| Nails: | well if its a choice between 'no strength and conditioning' and carrying pints up and down stairs then surely the hiking is better! |
| # Posted 2008-06-20 02:07:06 | |
| hel vino: | i've nothing against the odd sit up or hiking with beer but just can't see the point of doing 1-2 hours of weights a week unless you do at least 6 hours of running. shiit it's looking all over for Portugal... |

| OJ: | Jessie Niggle, isn't that what Simone and Matthias are planning on calling their new baby? |
| # Posted 2008-06-20 14:01:52 | |
| candyman: | pre-had, re-hab, injury prevention... some people need to do an hour of that to be able to train 6 hours a week, like I said all things in proportion depending on what your strengths and weaknesses are.
For me at the moment the only chance I could train consistently for 6 hours a week would be if i did at least an hour of knee stabilty and strengthening work every week. Without it i just get progressively sorer until I'm a cripple. What I enjoy doing is just running and I have been too slack to do the necessary strength work so i run as much as I can but can't even manage to do 6 hours every week. If you can just run good luck to you I wish it was as easy for me. |

| hel vino: | yeah ok fair point sorry for the rash comments. i have been lucky the last couple of years or maybe I have done just enough S+C. Pissed off about the footy now. was supporting Sweden then after Wednesday night decided Ok will support Portugal. Bloody Germans, entertaining match tho, even watching Scolari's expressions was entertaining. |

| candyman: | I just want the Italians to get beaten then I will be happy, will be devastated if they win! |
| # Posted 2008-06-20 15:58:35 | |
| hel vino: | I'm supporting Spain now - hope that doesn't jinx them against Italy! |
