gas_turbine: There seems to be trash out every day. Having multiple trash companies seems to be terribly inefficient - the large trucks beating up the road every day instead of once a week. In most other places, the city is in charge of the garbage.

But I guess that's the price we pay to decrease organized crime... (I think that's why it's done this way)

Perhaps a more fitting term is "monopolistic" - more than anything, I've seen the ability to change companies act as a deterrent to "we can charge anything we want" behavior.

We had three companies servicing our area, and one bought another, so we're back to 2.

Of course, if you want to have the city arrange for your trash pickup, you can move inside the line, they do it there;-)
