RLShadow: 1. Black Creek is definitely my least favorite local orienteering venue.

2. Last year's weekend Score-O was on a Saturday morning (also at Black Creek; at 10 am). As was the weekend Score-O two years ago (at Genesee Valley Park -- and it was still incredibly hot that day, I recall, but of course better in the morning than the afternoon would have been). So there is some precedent for having morning starts in the summer. I don't recall specifically what the thought process was with this year's schedule, and why the score-O was on a Sunday (where it does make some sense to avoid a morning meet, where there might be more church conflicts). It does seem like having the meet on a Saturday, and in the morning, would make more sense. We'll need to make sure we keep this in mind for future years' schedules.

Most summer Score-Os are on weekend evenings -- it's only been the last few years that we've experimented with having one Score-O on a weekend. The attendence has typically been about the same for weekend vs weeknight Score-Os.

3. I wasn't at this meet so I can't comment on the control placement, but one of the only enjoyable times I had at Black Creek was around 4 years ago when Larry Zygo set a score-O there. The controls were all relatively close to trails, and fairly easily findable once in the right area. (But not so obvious that you'd stumble across them if you were blindly running down a trail.) It might have been low on technical orienteering challenge, but it was a definite strategic challenge, in terms of route planning, and a very definite physical challenge. I thought it was a very good job of using the strengths of the park (large park, lots of trails) while minimizing the obvious weaknesses.

bishop22: This meet was originally proposed for Saturday, July 12th. I can't remember what drove moving it up a week (perhaps learning CNYO's Rogaine date?), but once it was going to be the holiday weekend, Sunday made more sense - to perhaps have more people back in town (although it is Monday, and I, for one, am still in Canada). I didn't suggest any start times, but I think we do (and should) attempt to avoid the mornings on Sundays.

Black Creek? Well, we only have so many maps, right? I agree with Dick, that Black Creek can be good for Score-O, with brief detours off trails to collect the punches, and a great deal of fast running and order selection in between. I think I've done two events at Black Creek, and both times I was on trails a very large percentage of the time. I've hashed at Black Creek many times, and it can be pretty frustrating having to go thru the thick stuff there.

feet: Yes, we only have so many maps, and I won't be back on this one, I think. Why spoil a good trail run ;) ?

It's interesting the different attitudes to church attendance and orienteering. 10am Sunday starts are the default in much of Australia, but with only around 6% of the population attending church on the average weekend, this is less of an issue (and obviously some of those who attend can manage to work around the timing, and since church attendees are disproportionately older, many of them are not potential orienteers). Even in Boston most events seem to be at that time.

Rosstopher: I've always liked earlier starts because I would otherwise just sleep until 1pm and get up for the orienteering, this way I can potentially do something productive afterwards.
