jjcote: So Diego is your... what? English should have a word for that. Kind of like a step in a different direction.

barb: Yeah, don't have good prefix (or combination of prefixes) (or suffix) for new relative of ex.

Bill (my ex) told me that when the foster family, who loved Diego very much, came by to hand him over the final time, everyone was teary, but David really cried. Which is sweet and wonderful but embarrassing to David.

peggyd: The foster family system in Guatemala (& a few other countries) is really wonderful for the children, who learn to attach, but it's very hard for the adults to hand them over to their adoptive parents.
I'm not sure it's a whole lot easier in Russia; Max was a clear favorite in his baby home & one of his caregivers traveled with him to the provincial capital to get him to us. She was clearly very sad, and she made sure she left while Max was sleeping so she didn't have to say goodbye to him. It makes me tear up just to think about it.
I just sent two years' worth of photos of Max along with an new adoptive parent who would be seeing our translator. I asked her (the translator) to share them with the women at Max's children's home. They *love* to see pictures of "their" kids!
