| Bash: | Turkeys are mean depending on where they are in their reproductive cycle. We think that the turkey who flew at Gazelle may have been a female protecting her young.
Before we were married, 'Bent became Public Enemy #1 to a bunch of turkeys. His brother was living in Africa at the time, and he used to send us marvelous audiotapes with cool sounds in the background. Not to be outdone, 'Bent went out to the flock of turkeys in his front yard with a tape recorder and started making "gobble, gobble" sounds in an attempt to get them to speak. It worked a little too well. This was mating season, and these were males who suddenly saw a new competitor in their midst. They started gobbling all right, and they chased 'Bent right into his car. Luckily, he caught it all on tape, including the pecks against the car window. It was played on CBC's "As It Happens" a couple of times that year. |

| Bash: | The situation continued beyond that day, and whenever 'Bent or his roommate arrived in the driveway, they would use a broomstick to fend off turkeys as they went to the house. The house was for sale, and they lived in fear of a real estate agent arriving with prospective clients to discover some guy - maybe wearing tights from cycling - leaping about the driveway with a broomstick surrounded by an aggressive turkey flock. |

| Bash: | This was before the digital age, but sometime we must get it transferred to an electronic medium. Since you can't hear the recording at the moment, it went something like this.
'Bent: Gobble, gobble, gobble! Male Turkeys: Hey, intruder trying to steal our ladies! Gobble, gobble, gobble!! 'Bent: [Pushing tape recorder forward happily] Cool! Gobble, gobble, gobble! Male Turkeys: How dare you?! Gobble, gobble, gobble, gobble!!! [Start flapping wings and chasing 'Bent] 'Bent: [Pant, gasp] They're coming after me! [Thump, thump of 'Bent's footsteps as he runs to the car, gets in and slams the door.] Male Turkeys: Gobble, gobble! [Peck at car window] 'Bent: [Probably hysterical laughter, but I can't remember exactly what he said next. Maybe he does.] |
