bshields: I don't own a car, I use the big dig rarely and only tangentially, and yet the hike in T and bus fares, which I am paying, is mainly to pay off the debt on this disasterous monstrosity?

Of course, it's worth noting that a majority of the $14.6 billion cost of the Big Dig was absorbed by the Federal government - i.e. much of the funding for the Big Dig comes from taxpayers from other states. The initial bill in Congress appropriated $2.3 billion. The whole project, while effective in its objectives (apart from the leaks and shoddy construction), really screwed pretty much everyone. Except the contractors, of course. They made lots of bucks.
