fletch: to make it. I wasn't going to, bt it may be the only O practice run I get before the state champs, and with your ringing endorsement it doesn't sound as miserable as I thought it might be :)

simmo: You need to put something in the newsletter and e-news to sell it to all those doubting Thomases out there.

tRicky: I have heard conflicting reports of the bush around there. If you say it is nice then I will come!

#  Posted 2008-07-21 10:20:52
Tooms: How does it compare to the JFNP event? That was much better than Beraking but not as nice as Wundabinaring for example.

#  Posted 2008-07-21 10:32:24
Craig: You need to remember that I enjoyed running Terry's "hell course" at South Ledge.

#  Posted 2008-07-21 10:38:42
Craig: Actually the bush is pretty similar to the JFNP event but there are more clearings and rock surfaces and it is mapped a lot better.
There is quite a bit of green on the map but very little of it is prickly and you can navigate around it because it is only green where mapped that way.

Craig: I got more scratches and prickles from running my course at Calophylla than I did taping all 44 controls at Mt Dale the day before and the run at Calophylla was really enjoyable.
I can't say the taping was enjoyable but that is because it was 5 hours of walking around fiddling about with metal spikes, sticks and bits of tape.

Tooms: I think I'll see how I feel on the morning - I must admit I thought of courses/maps you've "enjoyed" and sometimes that's mean't you enjoyed the tough physical nature of the challenge that cream puffs like me don't necessary share your connoisseur's appreciation for!

#  Posted 2008-07-21 19:48:16
Rachel: Well I would consider myself one of those cream puffs and I found day one of the state champs last year not that bad. There were a couple of legs through green but it wasn't overwhelming and not especially prickly- certainly nothing like what I went through on my little course at Beraking.

#  Posted 2008-07-22 11:45:05
tRicky: I think I still have prickles from Beraking.

Craig are you saying we can go around green patches on the map? My orienteering is improving with every tip I gather!

#  Posted 2008-07-22 14:55:11
Craig: Only if you are a cream puff.

#  Posted 2008-07-23 11:07:03
Tooms: What you do tRicky is to avoid a green patch to you stop at the edge of it, take a bearing 90 degrees different to yours, pace count the required distance perpendicular to your (former) direction of travel then stop, go back onto your original bearing, pace count again enough, stop, adjust your bearing by 90 degrees and head back towards the far side of the green. Voila, back on your original line but around the green. Turn back onto your original bearing and on you go. Repeat this process for every detour you need to make and you'll know exactly where you are all the time. I've seen Craig implement this technique when I've been hammering along behind him - it seems to work as he always beats me.

When you've got this down pat ask about the next step in refining the technique, 120 degrees.... ooooohhh!

#  Posted 2008-07-23 12:33:31
Rachel: Obviously Craig is a cream puff by his own definition. Every time I have done orienteering training with him he always runs around any green stuff, waiting for me at the far side of it saying, "What did you run through there for?"

#  Posted 2008-07-23 15:17:02
simmo: The green was a decisive factor at the World Champs long race. After 14-15kms there was a series of short legs in the green, where the winner took the lead for the first time in the race. See playbacks at http://www.woc2008.cz/anim/long/index.htm#LongF
Click on Daniel Hubmann takes the lead 29th control. No good being a cream puff here!
The long leg was interesting too. There was a map change at the start of this leg, so they had no time to plan it.

Tooms obviously believes all patches of green are rectangular!

#  Posted 2008-07-23 16:47:03
tRicky: It all looks too complicated and scientific for me. I find it easier to try and run in a straight line and hope the feature is there when you arrive at where you're supposed to be but generally it's not.

#  Posted 2008-07-23 17:20:32
Tooms: Nah Simmo, just employing standard airliner avoiding thunderstorm procedure... I think I read it in a rogaining book (shudder) some years ago as to how to go around a swamp accurately... ie pace counting lots. Hence the 120 degree thing, you could do a triangle instead if you're tRicky's rogainign status!

#  Posted 2008-07-24 06:56:14
tRicky: Who goes around swamps in a rogaine? The Blue Moon rogaine of 2004 Ian and I just went straight through the middle of one. It's the only way to stay competitive! It also helps throw the scent for any Rogainers trying to follow.

#  Posted 2008-07-28 07:32:32
tRicky: I hereby withdraw my attendance at the Mt Dale event due to an ongoing calf strain and only a short break between the 24hr rogaine and the Espresso race. Apologies.
