| bishop22: | To be a truly elite runner a la Pat D, you need natural ability and a lot of hard work. In the Steeplechase, he beat a whole bunch of talented runners who worked hard - that was the fastest high school time in the nation this spring.
I don't think we can get you down to 9:07 next spring, but it will be fun to see how far you continue to improve this fall (let's go one season at a time). Think about goals and dreams for yourself and your team this fall. I know my dream goal is for the team to make the state meet. It's not out of the question, but it will take more dedication than we've seen so far, by more kids - our class at Sectionals will be very competitive this fall. I'll be writing about that in an upcoming blog (sometime before practices start). There are physical limits to running. Very few high schoolers come within 5-10% of their physical limits (even given their level of training). There are also mental limits to running. They need to be overcome. Good races hurt - they hurt a ton; however, the feeling after a good race is like nothing else. The best runners get through that pain, but they do it in a myriad of ways. Some focus on the pain, some try to disassociate. It takes trials to see what works best for an individual. I'll stop now. I've only touched on the tip of the iceberg, and there are many directions to take this conversation - we should talk live some time soon. In the meantime, MAKE PHONE CALLS. An easy way for you to get better is to have better teammates. Cajole them, heckle them, mock them, compliment them. Do whatever it takes to get them out the door (with you and the regulars at practice, or on their own). Call everyone. Call Chris. Call Arjun. Call Wade. Call Garion. |
