fthfl stwrd rudy: Are you just re-familiarizing yourself with freestyle? Are you training for an event? Do yourself a huge favor and practice 3 stroke breathing and alternate side breathing. It will be a little painful now, but much easier than later when you have more established patterns, and it will make you a better swimmer - spoken from the perspective of someone who is not a good swimmer, and wishes he had trained as described above. I just gave up because it seemed too hard, and i thought my way would be good enough. Wrong.

MDeVoll: Just refamiliarizing myself for now, using swimming for cross-training. At some point I might try to train for an event, but my swimming is so weak that I can't imagine doing an event for some time. I'll try what you suggest, but let me know why it's preferable than what I'm doing now (2 stroke side breathing to same side). Knowing why I'm doing it will help me feel motivated.

fthfl stwrd rudy: Now I cannot believe this virtual non-swimmer piped up with a know it all attitude, but as i understand it, alternating keeps your stroke more even and efficient, since you are stretching/moving to both sides equally. If breathing that way is a problem, drills where you practice breathing to the other side than you normally do are supposed to accomplish the same thing. I don't know if anyone actually swims that way except as a drill?

btw, do you have any objection to me listing you as co-director for the West Tyson meet?

MDeVoll: Your tips make sense. I'll give them a try.

No objections, except I'm hoping to follow your lead and learn, which would make me more of an Assistant Director. If there's no such term, then heck, co-director works just fine for me.

fthfl stwrd rudy: Matt, another aspect of being a meet director is having people call you up and ask you questions - Is it ok to post your e-mail and phone number the way we usually do? thx.

MDeVoll: Sure, no problem. Give them email mwdevoll@hotmail.com, and phone number 314-862-2092.
