1) I checked 2 bags on the plane both ways to the A-meet this past weekend. On both segments, it appears that the one with my tent, sleeping bag, and o-shoes got hand-searched after CT. I bet it was the metal studs. Anyone else have a similar experience?

2) was the model event #6 hung 1 flat rock too far north?

I've noticed my checked bags seem to get hand searched on almost every trip now. It could be those metal studs, or just a lot of extra hands paid to search bags...

However, I have been able to carry-on O'shoes with metal studs many times, and they've never been hand-checked.

So much about security at U.S. airports then ;-) Seriously, I think it's rather interesting, that one the other hand, "they" invested billions of dollars for buying new hightech scanners for x-raying checked in bags but on the other hand, every other week we get news that some fool was able to smuggle stuff into a plane which certainly doesn't belong there... Of course you could kill someone with an Orienteering shoe but hey...

Re: #2. The model event wasn't vetted, in fact, I didn't even field check it. I just drew it up on paper and Ed Shafer hung tapes when he was out doing his vetting. Ed's pretty careful, so I figured if something was wrong, he'd tell me. He did mention that there seemed to be one too many flat rocks on the stream and felt the southern one (also the smallest) simply hadn't been mapped.

Gary hung the bags on Friday morning and throught everything was fine. During pickup, I was also surprised to come across the first rock, but when I got to the control bag, the surrounding features seemed right. In particular, the clearing at the N edge of the circle still looked a good 50m away. If it was a competition control, we would have thrown it out, but there didn't seem to be any harm leaving it in the model event.
