cmpbllv: Just beware...adding on a lot of mileage too fast, especially if you're running a lot of pavement and with old shoes, can be REALLY bad. And that's the experience of my youth speaking - back when I was young, invincible, and didn't know what "recovery time" meant. I've given myself serious overuse injuries twice in my career - once as a firstie running the Marine Corps Marathon, once as a young CPT on the Ft. Lewis 10-Miler Team, and it took yearS to recover fully.

You seem to be the planning type - think about looking at some distance training plans online to get a feel for what makes sense. I like the FIRST plans, and used Hal Higdon's marathon plans for my second (much better) marathon and 2 out of my 3 24-hour rogaines...MAJ Didier may also have some good advice on training for crazy adventures such as the 50-miler.

Have a great weekend! Sorry you're missing the odyssey at Fair Hill!

WileyKyO-T: Ma'am,

Thanks! I had an awesome weekend, and I did get some new running shoes while I was home. I had two stress fractures in high school and had some knee pain this past winter, so I don't want to repeat those.

Not sure if I'll actually do the 50 miler, especially since I've never even run a marathon, but I suppose after a certain distance it's just a matter of energy and willpower.

How did the rogaine go?

cmpbllv: Sounds like you had a great weekend - only thing that would make it better is convincing this new girlfriend of yours to take up orienteering and meet us around the country for various O meets...;-)

The rogaine rocked. Schubes and I took second (to Wyatt and Angelica Riley, no shame there) in our category and had a good time doing it. My husband and Jordan got all the controls (the only team to do so), the Trumps rocked and rolled, and Michael and Shawn had a great time up to about the 5-hour mark when they bonked and came back for food. But we were all doing some great navigation and ran at least 19 miles...

Yikes.

There is an opportunity to do it again this coming Sat if anyone's interested...but we'd have to organize it and put it together mighty quickly...

WileyKyO-T: I'm glad the rogaine was a good experience. I would be interested in doing one this coming Sat if we wouldn't have to go to the football game afterwards. I have been thinking about asking my TAC if I can go on an adventure race this fall near St. Louis--at least my girlfriend wouldn't have to go very far to see me--but I don't think it will have a good chance of being approved as it is over Army-Navy weekend. Maybe. But a rogaine would probably be good preparation anyway as I haven't orienteered for any distance longer than the Long Distance this past spring and am wanting to do the Hudson Highlander.

cmpbllv: We thought about organizing a trip to the rogaine in lieu of the football game...but Team Campbell is pooped after last weekend, and frankly, I'm not sure we want to train ourselves to navigate slowly. We're focusing on the HVO B meet on Sunday, instead. All you Yucs have OPPs, right?

Not a chance on the adventure race, by the way. Beating Navy is everything, and your personal presence is necessary to bring the 12th man to full strength! ;-)

WileyKyO-T: I'm a cow, but I do have OPPs. Still sounds like a good idea to me, even if it takes away some of my Sunday. And I'm not sure whether I hurt or help the 12th man--yesterday I was told we were going to lose to Navy because I inadvertently "broke the wheel" on the chocolate cake at lunch.

cmpbllv: Ugh, I can never remember what year you guys are. Sorry about that! Sheesh, you'll soon have your own wheels to get to where you need to go. Good stuff.

I thought the plebes were responsible for beating Navy! ;-) Speaking of confusing classes, that's one place none of us want to go again!! What exactly is "breaking the wheel?"
