O Steve!: ..is it just me, or does anyone else think Ian is putting in more training lately...take it easy there old man...how am I ever going to narrow the gap on you if you keep training regularly?....

#  Posted 2006-01-26 08:48:16
iriharding: i am doing more training.(25 days into the new year) .. AP fever plus Jerritt and you are chasing me , turning 50 this year ......

#  Posted 2006-01-26 19:38:13
Jerritt: I was noticing that too, but I just can't help thinking that its INDOOR training. I think that makes people soft.
Steve, the trails are holding up, but it sounds like you may be falling apart. Maybe both of you should begin curling or something a little more appropriate for those getting on in years.

O Steve!: thems fighting words....Ian, looks like it might be time to show these young punks that they should repect their elders.....

iriharding: those young whippersnappers need to be careful; I have just spent some time designing the Leb Hills night O course for 4/8/2006 event. I have so far designed red A, B, C, D....and brown A, B, C.... courses. With preregistration for the event I will be assigning courses individually. Some variations are loopier than others (same distance). Also I am hoping for a repeat thick-fog-night O with e-punch after which the young whippersnappers might have some explaining to do ( e.g. at the 2005 event there was a memorable 10 mins 5 seconds for 160 meters , even a 25:36 for 178 meters by some young guys ....that's the blistering (for a snail maybe) pace of 68 mins/km and 143min/km respectively ! Anyway back to the INDOOR exercise with scenery tomorrow, couch today.

pfc: So we're about finished with the first month of 2006 and we're sitting at:

The old fart: 16h 32m
The young pup: 35h 23m
The rugby-rowing-skiing-running-drinking machine: 20h 20m
Someone who has yet to be given a nickname: 24h 33m

Saddle up, boys!

(You can get your YTD training by going to http://www.attackpoint.org/viewlog.jsp/user_804/pe...
then just replace "804" with your user id - check the URL of your profile page to find it)

At least the contours are a little better at LebE. Better get those new trails mapped, though!

Jerritt: Its important to note here that we are at different phases of training. Here are my assumptions: Pete wants to peak for Primal Quest
Ian wants to peak for O season. Spring or Fall?
Steve wants to peak for Tri
And I am hoping to peak for the Birkie
As much as I am competitive about everything. I can't get too caught up in volume competition right now. Although I will admit that it is often the difference between doing the last lap and not.

#  Posted 2006-01-27 22:53:17
pfc: Jerritt, please know that I didn't intend that comment to provoke competition on volume-only, which is one of the more pointless competitions I can think of.

It was partly to change the subject from the old vs. young theme, but mostly to show off the link - if you fiddle with the numbers and date in the address you can get all sorts of slicing and dicing of your training results (e.g., I put in period_365 and could see that in the last year I had 90 hours of O and 634 controls. You've got 245 miles of skate skiing since last Feb.)

Also, it looks everybody's training last year was dominated by AR and/or O.

#  Posted 2006-01-27 23:09:51
Jerritt: Oh its not pointless. I have more volume than Ian. :)
I think all of this data has been extremely enlightening concerning my perceptions about my training versus the reality.
It has also as Ian pointed out in a recent e-mail created a bit of a habit in and of itself. I am going to have to begin logging my logging. then my volume would be way up there.

#  Posted 2006-01-27 23:26:28
pfc: I suppose by the time I get done entering the new training session, downloading my HR data, remembering my weight from the morning, deciding what intensity level, deciding what training style, entering a log comment, editing the log comment, editing it again, and repeating that two or three times, I've burned up about 15 minutes a day. That's an extra hour and a half a week! Call it "mental training."

Or maybe we could do like Spike. PG was giving him grief about rounding all his training up to the nearest 15 minutes.

I really do like the ability to get an overall view of how much time I've spent on O vs. biking vs. running vs. paddling.

#  Posted 2006-01-27 23:40:13
Swampfox: There are 2 ways to interpret Peter's comment about Spike's rounding. One interpretation would be that Spike is rounding up whatever training he does to the next 15 minute mark. But I don't think Spike would do that. The other interpretation is that if Spike were, say, finishing up some training and he had been out for 55 minutes, then he might choose to do 5 more minutes to get to 60 minutes. That's my guess; you'd have to ask Spike to be sure.

#  Posted 2006-01-27 23:56:34
pfc: Hm, maybe I read more sarcasm into PGs comment than there really was. Don't read too much into mine. Use motivation to round up training time, I wasn't suggesting that Spike, Jerritt, me or anyone else "overreports".

BTW, welcome to "virtual Minnesota", Swampfox!

#  Posted 2006-01-28 00:20:59
Swampfox: What? I ended up in Minnesota?? Not good, since I was aiming for Iowa City.

#  Posted 2006-01-28 06:23:13
O Steve!: well...I use to peak for sprint triathlon season in July but now I dont really peak for anything...just maintain consitancy and compete at various things throughout the year....its has to be fun and I like the variety....I have averaged training 7 hours a week for about 21 years now and its not likey to change....If I had time to train more I wouldn't...I like balance...for instance..I had 3 beers at happy hour tonight and will likely skip the training for today...but I might show up at the Governors Cup 25 xc ski race tomorrow....spur of the moment...

#  Posted 2006-01-28 08:06:34
iriharding: well ... lots of discussion.on this .. I actually got outside today for a 45 minute hike ... my training regime is basically for the spring O season starting with Georgia Nav Cup in Feb , an event in UK in early march (either a classic event 6 km or a 15 or 25 km goat type event...not sure which) , then spring MNOC season, then tri season (if body holds together). The airfare to GNC is a bit pricey so I told myself that with those $ being spent I had better work at it and be in top shape.

Back to Leb Hills Night O in April, anyone know where I can rent some large fog generators (suitable for covering 4 km2 ?) for the event.
