| distracted: | The guys showed me this one at the pub - it looked like a tiny clearing in what should have been runnable woodland but they also said it was like night in there. Interestingly it's mapped the same as the 2001/2 map. To me, that sort of feature suggests that they're looking for something to put a control on in what is otherwise a blank bit of forest. And the map seems to have got a lot greener in the 2 and a half years since I last ran there...
as for the compass issue, yes the EMIT brick can affect it but only if in the right place over the brick, and not by that much. With a thumb compass, I hold map and compass in left hand as one unit, and EMIT/SI in right hand and so then there's no excuse! |

| Ollie: | Agreed, there ain't no clearing there! It is a very runnable section though, just very dark.
I think my compass has just lost a lot of its magnetism - or maybe I was just going too fast for it to settle properly. |

| distracted: | I'm looking at all the analysis and routes for this one and it looks like there are more than several disastrous runs here - might have been a good one to miss!! |

| andyd: | Yeah - 19 was amazing. I thought there was an eclipse or something. I couldn't believe a forest could be so dark in the middle of the day! |

| Kat: | The W21L course also ran through a decently dark section of forest, but the control there did not look as cool as the Lord of the Rings one you guys had.
This was definitely a tough course but I think, in a way, we all needed a reminder of how tough courses can be. After the last two races I did, which were on fairly open terrain with easily readable maps, this was somewhat of a shock. I couldn't read the features while running (because they were smaller on the map), I had trouble relating reality to what was mapped, I had trouble with distance and direction and concentration. I fell over stuff, I got whacked with branches while trying to read the map. And there were controls *everywhere,* distracting me. But every once in a while, it is good to have a tough course like this. It will make us more careful in the future. And give us something to laugh (or grimace) about. |

| RobL: | Funnily enough I couldn't find anyone else after the event that had been to control 19 (my 8 on course 2). It really was the most bizarre thing. One minute sunshine, the next a virtual night-o.
And the emit, compass thing. Strangely I have also spent many an hour trying to get the brick to influence a compass needle. My conclusion is that it only happens during races. The brick obviously knows when to emit a high powered magnetic field for maximum effect .. :) |
