The 2008-2009 Salomon Adventure Running Series kicks off in one week with an almost sold out Salomon Raid the Hammer. Yup as of noon today we were only three teams away from reaching our limit of 90 teams - a new record!. That is an awesome way to kick off our Adventure Running Series.

The Raid the Hammer is our kick-off race this adventure running season. On February 21st 2009 we have our Snowshoe Raid and the series final will be the Giant's Rib Raid on April 11th, 2009.

It is not too late to be one of the last 3 teams to Raid the Hammer. Over $2,000 in Salomon gear and shoes and other prizes from Running Free, Axis Gear and Adventure Attic are available to win.

Awesome - looking forward to it! Definitely on the "must-do" list for any orienteers....

If you haven't done one already, plan to fit a Raid into your calendar sometime this year.

So, I am curious...

What was the reason for so the DISQs? Finishing as incomplete teams?

Why so many missing punches? Controls malfunctioned, or was it to shorten the course?

If this was to shorten the course, why were some of the people with less controls visited ranked ahead of people who visited them all?

Hammer:
Most of the disqs were teams that continued unranked with only 2 members (lost a team member due to injury or fatigue). A few teams also lost their SI. No controls malfuntioned. The missed punches were for teams that elected to skip a portion of the race course and take a time penalty (which is all part of the race strategy). Also some CPs were not SI (#10, #11, and #13) - hence the difference in number of controls on the map and on the SI results.

Hope to see you at the Salomon GRR in April....

Thanks to Mike VandenBosch the many photos from the 2008 Salomon Raid the Hammer are now online at the GHO Flickr site. Title photo shows Wil Smith leading the editors of Canadian Running Magazine into the "Vintage HKF" stage of the race.

What is with the penchant for using code names for teams in this and other adventure races? I recognized more people in the photos than I did in the results list.
Is there anywhere we can find a legend linking Pye, Trip le Team, Quo Vadis and others with the names on their driver's licence, for instance?

See if the "confirmed team entries" link from the main web site is still active. That had names and teams.

Registration is now open for the 2009 Salomon Snowshoe Raid.

February 21st, Horseshoe Resort, Barrie, Ontario

With close to 1m of snow already in the forest, this year's Salomon Snowshoe Raid (race #2 of the 2008-2009 Salomon Adventure Running series) is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet. Race Director Bob Miller promises a challenging three hour course and promises that no team will 'clear the course'. The last race (Salomon Raid the Hammer) sold out so register early to avoid disappointment. The early bird deadline expires at the end of December.

Only 4 weeks to the 2nd race in the 2008-2009 Salomon DontGetLost.ca Adventure Running Series.

The Salomon Snowshoe Raid at Horseshoe Resort is less than four weeks away and we already have over 60 teams registered. Teams of two will have three hours to orienteer to as many of the 40 checkpoints as possible. Teams can expect deep powder snow and big hills and challenging navigation in the Copeland Forest. Awesome awards and door prizes from Salomon and our other sponsors. As a note to teams who haven?t yet registered, we may need to look at capping the number of entries if registrations continue at this pace. Our host venue can only accommodate a limited number of people, so it?s in your best interests to register early. We?ll keep everyone posted if we start nearing a possible registration cap.
