Discussion: Am I frying my brains? (some may say I don't have any)

While the arguement about mobile (cell) phones posing a health risk is mostly still inconclusive (I reckon they do but it doesn't worry me as I find this technology mostly avoidable in my day to day life) I was wondering whether a recent practice of mine may be putting me at risk.

I recently purchased an iGot-U GPS tracker and have taken to wearing it under my cap.

The reason I do this is to maximise it's look at the sky and hence better my chances of picking up the most positioning satellites for a more accurate result.

I'm wondering if I'm actually being silly having it right next to my grey matter. My thoughts are that it's OK because these devices would seem to be passive and only detect rather than transmit signals.......but I'm thinking I might strap it to my arm instead as a precaution.

Any thoughts? (or have the mobile phones already got you)

Cheers

Tundra/Desert:
You're dealing with femtowatts of incoming signal (which bathes all of the Earth) and at most a few microwatts of radiated leakage from the circuitry (even that would be a poor design). By comparison, a cell phone antenna puts out a couple watts at some phases of the call. Translation: wait a couple thousand years and you'll most definitely be dead.

Trolling again Leepback! I'd be more worried about the wear and tear on your skull.

Thanks Tundra........"femtowatts" sounds impressively low.

Thought as much but doesn't hurt to ask. Suppose I've got more chance of a stick/branch penetrating my skull than that amount of power.

Hey Invisible.........Thanks to you I'm now more worried about wear and tear on my hair and further increasing the size of my bald patch. Probably a fear more valid than the original.

To avoid the wear & tear try superglueing the GPS receiver to your bald patch so it doesn't move around - you'll just have to have a range of caps for all occasions. The GPS will also stop some of the sticks penetrating your skull - good for preventing magpie damage too.

If you do this you can then worry about the effect of superglue chemicals (isocyanate?) on your finely honed running metabolism
